Cooperating with PT Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD), Universitas Pelita Harapan?s Faculty of Medicine held a seminar discussing cervix cancer as one of the many programs arranged for Preventing Cervix Cancer Campaign. Situated in MYC Centre, the seminar was delivered by Martina Claudia Tobing. The seminar is open for all UPH students and staffs.

In this seminar, Tobing explained that it is important for everyone, especially woman, to understand clearly everything regarding cervix cancer. According to the data she gave, every woman has significant risk of having cervix cancer for cervix is listed as one of several parts of a women?s body that are susceptible to cancer.

She also explained thoroughly how quick the cervix cancer has developed in Indonesia, as well as in other countries. The enormous amount of these cases has been the main motivation for PT. Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) Indonesia to hold a campaign to prevent cervix cancer. According to the data, there are now 490,000 cases of cervix cancer in the world, and 240,000 among which has caused death. From those cases, about 80 percent takes place in developing countries.

What is the cause of the increasing number? ?The danger is that in the early stadium of this cancer, we often do not find any symptoms,? explains Tobing.

In Indonesia, this cancer apparently represents 34.4% of all cancer cases. The fact, for the doctor, means that it is important to have early understandings of this cancer.

Experts believe that the main factor that causes this cancer is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), HPV virus represents 99 percent of all causes of cervix cancer. Therefore, as an addition for this seminar, UPH and MSD will also arrange vaccination for HPV virus for all interested participants on Wednesday (25/2) at UPH.
