Lippo Village (23/11) – The first Bali bombing in 2002, which shook the Indonesian tourism industry, takes a long time for recovery. The threat is one of the two factors that are associated with the hospitality industry. National disasters like earthquakes or floods, and environmental influences such as swine flu or social unrest (demonstrations, mass fights, etc.), is the unpredictable factors. So what should we do when things outside the control that happen?
The topics are discussed from the aspect of government and hospitality businesses in a seminar titled “Overcoming the Challenges and the Threads Towards the Hospitality Industry” which was held by Pelita Harapan Tourism School, Monday (23/11) at building D502 UPH campus Lippo Village.
Broadly speaking, those two kinds of threats can be overcome with preventions and good public relations. “Prevention includes appropriate building standards, periodic maintenance, employees working on the standard operating procedures (SOP), and ensure that the building was insured,” said Carla Parengkuan, Executive Director of the Association of Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants (Perhimpunan Hotel dan Restoran Indonesia – PHRI), one of the two seminar speakers.
While the other speakers, Noviendi Makalam, Marketing Director General Secretary of Indonesia Ministry of Culture and Tourism expressed the need of PR, especially when the threat has become reality. “PR functions as a source of information. In a situation that is not conditional, should we open the media center, so that all information entered into it and who need information can get in there, too. So the information flow was clear,” said Novi.
The government should also take part in the restoration of the image of Indonesia, especially the tourism and hospitality. ?They can hold a simulation workshop, preparing guidelines for anticipation and rapid response, and the guidelines has to be disseminated, monitored and evaluated, as well as providing the budget to support these activities,” added Novi.
