Pelita Harapan University Conservatory of Music Department successfully won three championships title at the University Jazz Competition, Sunday (22/11) at EX Plaza, Jakarta. Two representatives of UPH, 414 Band ranked 1 and 416 Band ranked 3 in Jazz Goes To Campus (JGTC) Competition 2009, at University of Indonesia campus, Depok. Four Fourteen Band consists of Gabriella Puteri Miranda, Bayu Adli Isman, and William Sugianto. Meanwhile, 416 Band members are Abram Arbianto Lembodo, Reynold Banea, Kevin Yosua, and Dimas Aditya.

Preparation for this competition is only a week. But the teams that are often performing on stage together are quite compact and have a routine time practicing in campus, though not for competition. No wonder that they agreed to call their band 414 and 416 which are taken from the number of regular classroom they use for practice.

Despite the relatively short preparation, in fact, several other awards could be achieved by UPH crews. Be it Gabriella Putri Miranda (best keyboardist), Andrie Wibowo (best guitarist), Bayu Adli Isman (best saxophonist), Jupiter Galileo (best bassist), and Dimas Aditya Pradipta (best drummer). “We never targeted to win, but we also don?t want our music just go away. We want the experience, but not just perfunctory playing. So we want our music to be enjoyed too.” said William Sugianto, a student majoring in Performing Arts & Production Management (PAPM), 414 Band personnel.

In these competitions, two songs, Backup and Bluessete performed by 414 Band with the ballads and slow motion arrangement. This arrangement recipe obtained after playing the chords repeatedly. “He (the jury) said that he had no idea to do the arrangements like that. We also assisted by major professors, we are given many formulas to find the chords gap, then combine it, so we get different chord substitutions,” said Putri.

According to Revie Pogoh, Head of PAPM, UPH students have a good position in Indonesia music competitions. Previously, UPH also won the awards in 2001, 2006, and 2009 in the JGTC competition. “Along these 10 years, UPH music students always excel and make a contribution to the music world. Whether it’s through the orchestra, clinic, workshop, recital and other performances.” added Revie.

Still in the series of JGTC event, Four Fourteen Band and Four Sixteen Band will perform at University of Indonesia campus together with JGTC artists, from local and international. Including Syaharani, Riza Arshad Oele Patiselano, Maliq N D’essentials, etc. on Sunday (29/11). (sar/ros/cyn)
