Lippo Village (15/03) – Faculty of Computer Science, Computer Engineering Department University of Pelita Harapan University held a Lego Robotic Competition. In collaboration with Lego and Creative Kids, this competition was followed by high school students and university students.

“Actually, our initial target was only high school students. When we publicize the event, many schools were interested to join, but unfortunately now is the time for the high school students to prepare their UAN (Ujian Akhir Nasional ? National Final Exam), so the students are not allowed to get out of school, they should focus on UAN. So we opened the competition for the public, too,” said Geraldi Tjoa as Person in Charge of this competition.

images/jsnews/geraldi.jpgThey are targeting high school students because the purpose of this competition is to introduce Computer Science department to the society, especially high school students so that they are interested in this department. “Computer Science is grappling a lot in the field of robotics, how to assemble the robot and make its software so that the robot can walk. It?s really exciting and challenging,” added Geraldi.

In this competition, participants were given ninety minutes to assemble the robot and make its software. After that the robot will be tested by the judges consisting of Lego and UPH parts. Geraldi explains, “The robots will be tested on a track. In that track there are paths and each path has a different point. When the judges test the robots, it was also the time for assessment.”

Each team is allowed to test the robots ten times. “For example, in the first trial the value is 50, they can repeat and hold up to ten times and the score that will be taken is the last one. So if the seventh experiment valued 80 and the tenth experiment valued 70, then the 70 one will be used,” said this Computer Science student batch 2009.

Cooperation with the Creative Kids is on providing the tools, making tracks for the assessment, assessment forms, and procedures of the competition. “They also gave guidance (briefing) to the participants on the competition procedures,” said Geraldi.

This robotics competition held in a series of FALCON (Faculty of Computer Science) Project 2010 event. In addition to this competition, there will be “Information in Touch” talk show and Overclocking Contest on Wednesday, and “Success in IT Business, Can You?” seminar on Thursday. Winners of this competition will be announced during the closing FALCON Project on Thursday. (cyn)
