Friday, 12th March 2010, Times Bookstores in cooperation with Universitas Pelita harapan presented a book discussion based on Lee C. Bollinger’s newly launched book : ?Uninhibited, Robust, and Wide-Open: A free press for a new century.?
This event started at 9 to 11am at Hotel Aryaduta Jakarta, Jl. Prapatan No. 44-48, Jakarta Pusat. The guest speakers were: Endy Bayuni – Chief Editor of The Jakarta Post; Ezki Suyanto – Board of Alliance of Independent Journalists; Andreas Harsono – Chairman of PANTAU Foundation; A. Lin Neumann – Chief Editorial Advisor of The Jakarta Globe; John Riady – Editor At Large at The Jakarta Globe and Lecturer at the Universitas Pelita Harapan Faculty of Law. The program was moderated by Prof Dr Tjipta Lesmana, Head of Study Program Master of Communications – Universitas Pelita Harapan.
Bollinger?s book is a sympathy towards the press world because of the technology and information development and global crisis effects. Bollinger thinks that “globalization intensifies our need for the press to remain free and independent so that it can report accurately on the world, from the world, to the world.”
?When there are too many freedoms there will be chaos everywhere?, said Tjipta Lesmana at the beginning of the seminar. It was seconded by Ezki Bayuni with the suggestion ?If there is a really real freedom, we can write and publish anything, in every hour.? This is why we need a clear law, not just to define a limit of press freedom, but also to define the protection for the journalists.
Lin Neuman agrees. Neuman found the weakness of law protection for journalists, specially in Asia. Andreas Harsono took a sample from this case. If the American press make a mistake, for the sake of public interest, they will be not punished. But in Indonesia, because of a mistake, a journalist could be arrested and punished. John Riady commented on the importance of a journalistic?s education. ?I hope UPH can establish a journalism school?. (dar)
