Three students from the Faculty of Law ? Universitas Pelita Harapan, succeeded to get the first prize in a Debate Competition of Universitas Padjajaran (UNPAD) Law Fair on March 19-22, 2010. They are: Hanny (FH 07), Chris Lahema (FH 08), and Anthony Winza Prabowo (FH 07). The event is an annual event organized by Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, in cooperation with the local provincial government and several other government agencies. This is also a tribute to Prof. Dr. Sri Soemantri, SH.
A brief but effective preparation under the supervision of Mr. Meray Hendrik Mezaak (Administrative Law?s lecturer) has led to a great achievement.
There were 12 moshi (debate topics) that should be prepared by the participants, because only at the competition they would actually get a moshi through lottery in order to know whether they are in the pro or contra positions. In the final round, UPH was against Universitas Gajah Mada. “We got a moshi of People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) being bounded by the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) relating to the impeachment of the President. UPH team was in the contra position, while UGM team was on the pro side,” said Hanny.
The main point of UPH?s argument was that the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) is responsible to the people, not to the Constitutional Court (MK). Thus, MPR has the power to go against MK?s decision instead of obeying it. This whole argument has resulted a big favor from the jury on UPH?s team, and they brought home proudly a trophy and cash of six million rupiah. On the same event last year, UPH also be the winner, defeated Universitas Islam Indonesia. (cyn)
