We should start building awareness of the importance of protecting the earth early. This rescue effort surely will run well if it is given full support by all levels of society, ranging from children, teens, to adults. As a first step, Faculty of Medicine Senate Universitas Pelita Harapan in collaboration with Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) held a workshop on “Dedication for Green, Go Healthy by Kartini” Thursday (08/03) in M. Joseph Ronodiputro, Auditorium RRI Jakarta. Through this event, they were expected to grow self-awareness of participants, especially children to be more concerned about the state of the earth.
Presented as a speaker, dr. Puteri Nastiti Krisma of UPH Faculty of Medicine who explained about the importance of protecting the earth so that spared from destruction. As a concrete step the participants and organizers committed not using plastic drink bottles and carrying food from styrofoam during the event. This regulation was accepted enthusiastically by the 80 participants of the five elementary schools, namely: SDN 05 Pagi Kemanggisan, Jubilee (Full English Programme), Jubilee (National Plus), and Al-Azhar 13 Rawamangun. “This determination to keep the green earth should start with children. Inevitably, we must become the pioneers of the development of a healthy earth from now,” said Parni Hadi as Director of RRI.

Then, what kind of contributions can be given by these children? In her explanation, dr. Puteri recommended that children should begin to get used to separate two different types of waste, organic and non-organic. This habit can support the process of decay that will occur naturally. Various kinds of organic waste like vegetables, fruits, wood, and assorted junk are easily decomposed. While non-organic waste materials are difficult to decomposed, due to the chemical content in them. Examples of non-organic waste is plastic, styrofoam, iron, and so forth. Apparently, this was also done by some schools, such as Jubilee and Al-Azhar Rawamangun.

From dr. Puteri?s explanation, it was revealed that many of our daily habits make the state of the earth is getting worse. Some of them are junk-food consumption, wasteful use of paper / tissue, using the not earth-friendly transportation, and uncontrolled use of water. If this habit is allowed to continue, it will damage the ecosystem of which led to disasters such as flooding, melting of ice in the polar north, and the greenhouse effect.

Furthermore dr. Puteri also suggested that from now on we should start to switch to consume organic food more often. For that, the organizers had prepared delicious organic foods for the participants. Sandwiches, burgers, salads, and red rice which content have been modified in such a way into organic foods. Participants were also given a healthy snack menu which includes green food, like frozen grapes (grapes which is presented as sate) and hard boiled eggs (eggs that are covered in flour). In addition to healthy, organic foods taste is as well as ordinary food. This food is also rich in mineral content, not use dyes, free of preservatives, no chemical process, and easy to make.

“This kind of event is really helpful for developing what they have to think about on their environment and what should they do fort their environment. Every year we have this kind of activity, almost the same with this one, about go green, we plan some plants.” said Amelia Agustin, a teacher at Jubilee Full Home Programme. After the event, Della Rahminavi of SDN 05 Kemanggisan, is committed to implementing the suggestions of go green program described by dr. Puteri. “I want to plant a tree, throw trashes in its place, want to ride bicycles to school, want to tell my mom to turn off the lights, turn off the tap, save electricity, and so forth,” said Della.
