Monday (04/26) ? Universitas Pelita Harapan Electrical Engineering Graduate Program held a seminar titled “Photonics: Applications of Specialty Fibers and Nanophotonics”. This seminar was held in building F room 803, UPH Campus, Lippo Village.

Rapid technological developments can not be separated from its underlying optical cable speed. According to UPH Rector Jonathan Parapak who opened the seminar, there are four issues related to technology that will continue to grow in line with human needs in this area.

Jonathan Parapak
“First, broadband. Fiber is getting cheaper and it’s coming everywhere. Then, the Internet platform. In this era, basically, we are on the internet platform, even UPH is now trying to get lectures from abroad. Another developing aspect is multimedia; we can not live without it. Finally, mobile, so that we can enjoy the technology anywhere,” said Parapak.

He added that the technology must be beneficial for human welfare. “Because technology is for human beings,” continued Parapak. Therefore, we should be concerned with its content it is consumed by humans. It will be useless if technology is sophisticated, but only used for negative things.

Photonics seminar presented three distinguished speakers in the field of fiber optics. They were: Eduward Tangdiongga (from COBRA Research Institute, TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands), Danang Birowosuto (COPS Research Group, Twente University), and Henri Uranus (UPH Electrical Engineering Graduate Program).

Each speaker talked about the development of fiber optic cable in the future. Eduward for example, discussed the topic in terms of Plastic Optical Fiber (POF), which will be useful for home networking, that in the future, our house can be connected with the POF system. Danang discussed about embedding and tuning light emitting nanoparticle inside nanostructural environments like 3-D photonic crystal and random nanomaterials, while Henri discussed the uniqueness of photonic crystal fibers and UPH’s recent research work on related topics.
