PENA: Education For All
Education is the biggest issue that has always been discussed eversince the time of RA. Kartini, up to present time. Proper education for all people has always been strived for continually, but it is still inadequate when not accompanied by the understanding of true education. Based on this need, the Student Association of UPH Teachers College (HMJ TC UPH) held an event titled ?Education for All? (Pendidikan Untuk Semua ? PENA) at Universitas Pelita Harapan ? Lippo Village, June 14 ? 15, 2010. This premiere event which was intended to be an annual event in the future, brought up the theme of ?Dare to make a Difference?.
The event which has been planned since October 2009 is intended to make an influence by making a difference and integrating the Christian values in school education. There were 57 participants, consisted of 18 primary school teachers and 39 high school students from Christian and Catholic schools in the surrounding area of Tangerang and Jakarta. PENA programs were divided into two groups: Workshop for teachers and Holy Holiday Camp for student leaders.
Activities for students were mostly held outdoor to train their sense of teamwork, solidarity, and leaderships. The trainings were about skills in organizing school events which are not only entertaining for students but also raising the sense of students? nationalism, love for the country, and especially sharing Christ?s love to others.
?I gained a lot of experiences, as well as a new family. The important thing that I got was the ability to handle problems without being emotional,? said Rully, an eleventh grade science student from SMA Markus, who also admitted that when going back to his school he would try to be more relax and organize his team members more specifically.
One session that students also got was the Proposal Making, in which participants were guided in making proposal, looking for sponsors, until executing the program.
?….. learning to make a product: starting from preproduction, production, until postproduction,? said Denni Binsar, one of the jury who was evaluating this Proposal Making session.
As exciting as the student sessions, the teachers followed the indoor seminars that thoroughly discussed about true Christian education, with one of the titles ?Foundation of Christian Education: Are We Truly a Christian Teacher??, by Connie Rasilim. The participants were enthusiastic, giving lots of questions. It showed clearly how these teachers were very concern with the needs of true education which is still insufficient in Indonesian education.
In the 2-day PENA program, there were also book bazaar by Erlangga Publisher and Visi Book Store, as well as exhibition of visual aids creatively made by students of Teachers College, which later on would be given to the teacher participants to be used at their respective schools. ?PENA is there to share true education that started from fear of God, and it has to be felt by all people,? said Steven, the Chairman of the committee.
