Sacharissa, Universitas Pelita Harapan Visual Communication Design student from batch 2008, took first place at the national round of the Digital Poster Design Competition DEEP Indonesia 2011. This annual poster competition was held on March 2011 to increase public awareness, especially fishermen?s awareness, of the importance of protecting and preserving coral reefs.

Sacharissa studied the background of the competition and its target audience.  Then she designed a poster using images that would engage anglers. ?The poster was intended for fishermen, so I made it using the approach from the fishermen?s angle. What a fisherman cares about is not beautiful coral reefs, but he cares about how he and his family can live and what he can get from the coral reefs. Therefore, I designed the poster with fish so that it would have impact on the fisherman?s life,? Sacharissa explained.

This philosophical message aimed toward fishermen made the poster stand out. ?In this school of study, there are two aspects. The first one is philosophical, related to theory and concepts. The second one is the pragmatic aspect, related to practice. Sacharissa owns both of them,? said Head of Visual Communication Design Department Prof. Drs. Yongky Safanayong as he described Sacharissa?s excellence.  This competition is not Sacharissa?s first achievement. Last year, she won the Angpao design competition held by Versus Magazine.

The UPH Visual Communication Design students have a history of excellent performance at the DEEP Indonesia design competition that began in 2008.  Previous winners include Julius Tomo Ishak (1st place) and Fernand Sulaiman (2nd place) in DI 2008; Nikko Purnama Lukman (3rd place) and Yuvens Winatra (5th place) in DI 2009; Stephanie Pramoedito (1st place) and Nikko Purnama Lukman (5th place) in DI 2010.

The DEEP Indonesia 2011 competition featured an international exhibition that showed the progress of diving activity, water adventure, and water sports in Indonesia. This event was fully supported by the Department of Culture and Tourism, the Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of Environment, and the Association of Diving in Indonesia. The Department of Culture and Tourism officially declared DEEP Indonesia as the event included in the national agenda to improve diving and marine tourism in Indonesia. (dee)
