| Writing is actually fun. You can get money and even fame from it. To accommodate our young writers, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) organized a seminar entitled ?Kiat Menulis Artikel pada Media Massa Cetak Surat Kabar – Tips for Writing Article for Newspaper? at UPH Karawaci on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. This one-day seminar featured two speakers who regularly write for several printed media in Indonesia. R. Masri Sareb Putra who frequently writes for Kompas and Dr. Emrus, a Political Communication expert and UPH lecturer who also writes for several newspapers shared their experiences in writing articles. Approximately 31 UPH students, lecturers, and staffs joined the talk to know the secret to be a good writer. |
| Emrus said that writing is very beneficial. Writing makes you both knowledgeable and socially known. ?People who write are proven to be smarter than the ones who don?t. Writers usually work more systematically than others,? said him. He also encouraged the participants to write. ?Everyone can be a great writer,? said him again. He suggested several technical tips for beginners, such as to use a simple sentence. ?Use short sentence and choose simple words so that everyone can understand your writing,? he said. |

Masri also suggested other important tips for beginners. ?A writer must read a lot,? said him firmly. Creativity is also important to create a story. A usual travel itinerary can be turned into a great feature story. ?You can write anything as long you?re creative,? suggested him. ?Copy the master,? he told the beginners to copy the style of writing of senior writers they know. By doing this, you will find your own style. Another thing that is important for writing in the newspaper is to be current. ?Write current stories and your writing will be published,? he said. |
| Excited participants who were eager to ask a lot of questions were the sign of young bright writers who will shine in the future. Well, let?s hope this seminar can be the start of the emerging of great authors from UPH. (dee)
