Citation issues is a common problem in the educational world. Students frequently have to deal with citations and quotations, especially in writing papers and thesis. However, students often forget to include citations or footnotes that referred to the source of their quotes. This could drag them into a plagiarism case.
Plagiarism is taking essay, opinion, and so on from others and claiming it as those are ours. Perpetrators of plagiarism in the education world could get very severe penalties, such as revocation of academic degrees, or even dismissal from educational institutions. Because there are many cases of plagiarism in Indonesia, the publisher Canisius launched a book entitled Plagiarisme: Pelanggaran Hak Cipta dan Etika by Dr. Henry Soelistyo, SH, LL.M. On Thursday, October 26, 2011, UPH Faculty of Law hosted the book review in MYC, Building C, UPH Campus Karawaci. In this event, Professor. Dr. Bintan R. Saragih, SH, dean of faculty of law, said, “Put the ethical norms first instead of the regulation.” According to him, we must adapt the habit of respecting and appreciating other people’s work. “People who have no ethics will tend to violate the law,” added Prof. Bintan. The number of plagiarism cases in education world becomes Dr. Henry?s background in writing this book. He regretted if a professor title must be revoked and his career as an educator should be destroyed just because of plagiarism. The existing copyright law is more focused on economic rights, not a moral right. He thought the law should be made to protect the moral rights, not only economic rights. These rules of moral rights that seem to be forgotten should be increased. According to Dr. Henry, honesty must be upheld in the academic world. “Let us concern to citations problems, if not, get ready for double penalties of violations,” he said. Dr. Hinca Panjaitan, SH, M.H. and Dr. Belinda Rosalina, SH, M.H. were the reviewers of the Plagiarism book by Dr.Henry Soelistyo. In the book review, Dr. Belinda was debating whether plagiarism is a breach of ethics or law. She also explained the difference between plagiarism and copyright. Meanwhile, Dr. Hinca Panjaitan provided new ideas for the title of this book, named ?Menelanjangi Plagiarisme dan cara cerdas keluar dari ancaman itu.? Dr. Hinca also hoped that every university in Indonesia must be introduced to this book, so that all students and lecturers will be aware of plagiarism. This book review event was attended by approximately 170 participants from the Association of Indonesian IPR Society, representatives from the American Embassy, the District Court, the Secretariat of State, the Secretariat of the Vice President, several law offices, representatives of Asiri member, as well as law students and students of faculty of social sciences and political science UPH. Dr. Henry hoped that this book would not discourage people and reduce the productivity of scientific papers but aware of copyright issues and not become the victims of plagiarism.(bs) UPH Media Relations |
