Seminar for Teachers: Developing Writing Skills with ?Wiki?

On Thursday, November 3, 2011, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) held a seminar entitled ?Developing Writing Skills with Wiki (MOODLE)? for High School English teachers. The seminar was attended by more than 20 teachers from various High Schools across Jakarta and was held on the UPH Graduate Campus, Plaza Semanggi.

The speaker, Agus Santoso, S.Pd., M.A., Ed.D., who is also Head of the English Education Department at UPH, shared his knowledge and experiences in using ?Wiki?, an application which can be found in MOODLE (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment), which is an e-learning software platform. ?E-learning is rarely used as a teaching technique in High Schools and we would like to introduce the benefits of using this e-learning program to High School teachers so that they can use it. With e-learning, our students can ?study? twenty four hours per day; seven days per week,? Agus explained enthusiastically.

In the beginning of the seminar, Agus touched on the phenomena happening in our life regarding the difficulties of developing the students? writing skills. Then, together with the teachers, he discussed the challenges that they had encountered in teaching English. At the end of the seminar, the participants also had an opportunity to create a wiki, in order to have some hands-on experiences to use MOODLE as a conducive teaching-learning atmosphere.(dee)
