Everyone wants to be good parents for their children. However, to be good parents is not easy. Sometimes, the parents could become very strict with their children, nurturing them to be a person the parents wish to be. The parents put the children into various courses. But sometimes, these efforts can make a child stressful. Why? Because they do not give the kids the opportunity to do what they want.
“Children are supposed to be nurtured in order to be what God wants them to be, not what the parents want them to be. God have destined our children to be something good, “said Mundi H. Lesminingtyas. The author of ?Tangan Yang Menenun? and ?Melewati Lembah Air Mata? shared her experiences as a parent in a seminar entitled “Parenting without Tension” held in UPH Children Day 2011: One Love for UPH. The event was held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at UPH campus, Lippo Village, Karawaci. Mundi added, “Children need to taught about life skills such as good manners, information seeking skills, communication skills, how to attract the sympathy of others, which are useful for life.”
Besides parenting seminar, there is also a health seminar entitled “Beware of Diarrhea in Children”. This seminar presented by Dr. Faziah, SPA was attended by approximately 40 participants, consisted of UPH staffs and lecturers and their families. Through this seminar, Dr. Faziah urged the staffs and lecturers as parents to pay attention to children’s health. “Diarrhea can quickly lead to dehydration, especially for children. While diarrhea occurs, we will need a lot of fluids and electrolytes. Diarrhea can also be a symptom of serious illness,” told Dr. Faziah. For prevention, now diarrhea vaccine is available and could be given to children aged 3-8 weeks. In addition, we also have to get used to wash hands before meal and after using the toilet. Raw food, fruit or vegetable should be washed before consumption to make it free from bacteria.
