Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) hosted the Asia Pacific Regional Round of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on World Trade Organization (WTO) Law organized by the European Law Student?s Association. The competition was March 2 to March 6, 2012 on the UPH campus. This competition simulated a hearing of the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement system. Law students from Indonesia, India, China, New Zealand, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam and panelists who are experts on WTO law joined this prestigious event.
ELSA is today the world’s largest independent law student association, and it is represented at more than 300 law faculties in 42 countries. EMC2 was first held in April 2003 in Geneva. Since then, ELSA has annually organized the competition. This year, Indonesia is hosting the international moot court competition. In addition, ELSA also organized an academic conference on trade and the economic issues to be held March 5, 2012, at UPH. The event featured experts from various countries as panelists and speakers. EMC2 Asia-Pacific Academic Supervisor Letizia Raschella-Sergi explained that the competition allowed the participants to make life-long professional contacts and befriend law students from the Asia Pacific region. Furthermore, the students had the chance to discuss issues with WTO experts. ?The Winner and Runner-up will have the opportunity to proceed to the Final Oral Round, which in 2012 will be held in Montpellier, France,? she added. On Monday, March 5, UPH and ELSA also held an academic conference on trade and the economy. The conference was part of the tenth celebration of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law. All participants and panelists joined the international conference. This academic conference featured two sessions: trade and development and trade and current issues. Speakers, who also served as the panelists for the competition, included Prof. Mitsuo Matsushita (Japan), Prof. Mary Elizabeth Hiscock (Australia), Prof. Shin-Yi Peng (Taiwan), Dr. Yanning Yu (China), Ambassador Manickam Supperamaniam (Malaysia), Roy Santana (WTO), Christian Vidal Leon (WTO), and James Lockett (ASEAN). WTO experts discussed trade issues based on their research. Some of the cases discussed were the Doha Negotiation, HAKI in Indonesia, and the relationship between WTO and ASEAN, among others. After the academic conference, the elimination round was held on Tuesday, March 06, 2012. In result, Jindal Global Law School as the winner together with National Taiwan University and Ateneo de Manila Law School who took the second and third place of the competition will join the Final Oral Round.
