Fulbright Scholar Program, a flagship scholar program, which was sponsored by USA government, was socialized at UPH on Thursday, May 10th 2012. Coming as the speakers were Tom Healy, Chairman of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Board and Mr Frank Whitaker, US Cultural Attache. Tom Healy gave a lot of information to the participants about applying scholarship in the USA.

One of information that was shared by Tom Healy was about how to arrange a good essay to apply a scholarship. To arrange a good essay, the first things that need to be included were the applicant?s Toefl result. After that, the other important thing was the applicants? personal essay. Here, the applicants could tell us about their personal information about themselves. On this point, the applicants could tell us about what would they do if they were accepted later. Tom Healy also encouraged the participants to make an essay, which was truly represented the applicants? personality. ?American universities see you as a person. They want to know what you plan to do with your community?, Tom Healy said. Interviewer wants to know what the applicants going to do, such as what activity the applicant would do at their church, or what the applicant would do with the American sport, like basketball.
?There was an applicant from China came for interview. When he was asked, if he was accepted later, what he would do besides studying, he answered that he would spend his time at the library. That is not only answer like this the interviewer want to get. They want the applicants, if they are accepted later, can also enjoy the American cultures, not only studying in class nor library?, Tom Healy explained.

Not only sharing about the application requirements, such as essay and interview, Tom Healy also said that it was better if the participants chose other universities besides universities that have already been well-known. There were hundreds of universities in the USA, which were also qualified. Therefore, the applicants better applied to other universities besides those ?well-known already? universities. By applying to these universities, the applicants also could get bigger chance to be accepted.
This socialization was not only attended by UPH students and lecturers, but also attended by other students outside UPH, students? parents, and some researchers who planned to continue their study in the USA. ?The early socialization like this is very helpful for us. It helps the applicants to prepare it well before the enrollment is opened again next year?, said Prida Ariani, the lecturer at FISIP UPH. (ft)
