Seminar ?Pursuing Music Career? was a part of UPH National Piano Competition annual event that was held at UPH for the fifth time on June 16 ? June 22 2012. This seminar was attended by the contestants and their parents.
This seminar, which was held for the first time in this fifth national competition, aimed to give a broader knowledge about having career in music. The seminar was opened for all contestants and public. Coming as the speakers were Dr. Kazuha Nakahara, Ananda Sukarlan, and Iswargia R. Sudarno. The speakers told the participants about their musical journey until they reached who they were now.
?Music is a tool to express. Through music, we express emotions, like sadness, happiness, and many more?, said Dr. Kazuha Nakahara. Music was also universal. ?When I was in Europe, once they recognize you are a musician, they will welcome you so much?, Dr. Kazuha Nakahara continued.
Having career in music gave opportunity to explore many new things. Besides being a professional musician, we could reach still many other occupations, such as music therapist, college music professor, and music administrator. Iswargia S. Sudarno, who had gained bachelor degree in architecture, chose music as his career at last. ?From teaching, I can make a living. I choose music because I can see the future?, he said.

Besides talking about career, the speakers also gave some tips for the contestants. ?When I joined competition in Europe, the judges, the music lovers, they wanted to see something different. When everybody played Chopin, Bach, I tried something new. I put Indonesian music, and they loved it?, Ananda Sukarlan explained.
This national piano competition aimed not only to find talented young pianists, but also could be an opportunity for the contestants to measure their ability in order to improve their skill, so they could broaden their experience to international level. (ft)
