James Riady speaks at Scholarship Day Seminar

Scholarship Day is an annual seminar and was again a part of this year?s UPH Festival events. High school students and their parents were informed about education in UPH. This year?s Scholarship Day had as its theme, ?A Holistic Education That Will Shape My Future.?

The seminar was opened with an explanation about admission procedures in UPH by Budhi Yuwono, Vice President for External Cooperation & Business Development at UPH. ?To apply for a scholarship, the most important procedure is the essay, because through the essay UPH is able to determine the motivation of prospective students and how their potential could be developed in UPH,? he said.

The seminar was then continued by a message from the co-founder of UPH, James Riady. He told about how hard it was to find workers for a hospital that he has recently opened in the eastearn part of Indonesia. According to him, this is a common problem that many organizations face in Indonesia. ?Each person is given a specialized education, but not given other needed learning, therefore the ability to think deeply is very rare,? he said.

To be a ready-to-use graduates, students need other skills that enable them to do many things dynamically, including the ability to think creatively and critically. ?Therefore we have established the Faculty of Liberal Arts in UPH to support the students to be more dynamic,? he explained

A high school student asked a question on Q&A session

The participants were enthusiastic, proven by the many questions asked by the high school students and their parents who attended. Some UPH students also told about their experiences of studying in UPH. For example, Angelia Wangkar, a medical student who was also Miss UPH 2012, said that she was happy to be here in UPH. ?UPH provides good classroom facilities, great lecturers, and an effective education system. From all aspects, something that impresses me is UPH?s concern for our spiritual attitudes and for building our character in order to make us good leaders,? Angel said. (ft)
