Making Life More Vibrant’

That is the motto upheld by Yayasan Pelita Jiwa, an organization founded by Felix Kristiadi who is a volunteer. Felix, a 65 years old man who is now acting as the Yayasan Pelita Jiwa coordinator, devoted himself to improve and to care the education welfare of less fortunate children. ?Eight years ago, I passed through the Sewan region, Neglasari Tangerang. I saw many children who, at their age, are supposed to be in school. But instead, they are playing at the landfill region. When I asked them, they said that there are no schools nearby,? he said. This lamentable condition touched his heart and Felix managed to have supports from some of his colleagues that also share the same vision as his.

Felix then built a house in that region to accommodate children under the age of five to study together there. He has a modest dream in building this house, for children who live there able to have access to proper education that is packed with knowledge and skill, as well as character development and faith in God.

Not stopping until that point, Yayasan Pelita Jiwa expand its operation to recovery efforts for people with mental illness. The rehabilitation center with the name Pondok Pemulihan is finally established in 2005. Pondok Pemulihan is the embodiment of Yayasan Pelita Jiwa vision over those who are inflicted with stress, depression, and schizophrenia. And thus, Yayasan Pelita Jiwa is currently operating three social services; Pondok Pemulihan with total of 25 male patients, house of studying and tutoring for less fortunate children at Cisadane riverbanks that accommodate around 50 children, and house of studying at Rawa Kucing region for scavengers? children that provide education for 50 students.

2009-2013 Project Community Service Learning (PCSL) Form Cooperation with 60 partners

Project Community Service Learning (PCSL) UPH, started in 2007, has assisted thousands of projects for social groups that in need of help and support on various regions, especially regions located around UPH. This project has given many benefits for people that are being served as well as students who are working to serve them. Of course, with many groups that have to be tended to, PCSL UPH does not operate by itself. From 2009 to 2013, 60 social organizations and NGOs have formed cooperation with PCSL UPH.

Felix and his colleagues from Yayasan Pelita Jiwa is one of the 60 social organizations and NGOs (international and regional based) that have been incorporated in the Community Service Learning (CSL). CSL is one of student affair division of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), with participation from the faculties, that strive to educate students so that they will have social awareness.Through the CSL division, UPH, as the higher education organization, is putting its best effort to give students a holistic education that motivate and

connect students with those who are less fortunate, both physically and mentally.

On the other hand, CSL program, which also has been included as a part of UPH curriculum, has given many positive contributions for the society in their efforts for building a better life. Through the various projects that had been arranged with the local organizations, the definite result can be seen, ?Recently, a group of UPH students from the Department of Music visited the rehabilitation center. They perform musical pieces that calm the hearts and minds of the patients inflicted with stress. Students from other places are also enthusiastically waiting for UPH students? visit.  The children warmly welcome them and also feel motivated with the activities.? The joy that can be felt in UPH students? activities are also expressed by Sugiarti, a volunteer teacher at Rawa Kucing. ?UPH students? assistance has been a great help for teachers in this school. They helped us in teaching English, simple arithmetic, and many other lessons. We are greatly helped and also expecting for another visit of UPH students to this school. Likewise, the children are also feeling the same every time UPH students come to visit,? Sugiarti conveyed.

With CSL, UPH is aiming to put two impacts in one action: supporting the education improvement of less fortunate community so that they have the capacity to strive for a more fortunate life and producing graduates who have a social, environment, and surrounding awareness. For UPH, every person has a right for a holistic education that gives true knowledge which will grows a person with brilliant characters, and become spiritual guides in spreading the words of God, The Creator.
