To celebrate the twentienth anniversary of Univesitas Pelita Harapan, James Riady, as the founder of UPH held a parents gathering meeting on Saturday, 24 May 2014 at Building D 501. This event is important for the parents to know the quality of education that their children had received in the university. Not only to understand, but also to guide their children on having a successful life in the future.

? I like to see that my child is taking his studies seriously. But I wonder if his hobby, playing music in a band will disturb his academic,? said one of the parents in the Faculty of Medicine sharing her struggles to Doctor Eka. In response to the question, Doctor Eka explained how significant social life would effect the students life. ?It?s good that we study hard and focuses ourself on getting a good mark, but being a doctor is beyond that. Being a doctor means that we need to have a good social skills, and adapting to situation quickly. Therefore, activities outside the studies would definitely add their life skills. Sometimes the students also create a performance as a medium to refresh their mind, and even the lecturers are invited to participate.?

Then, to continued the event, the parents were having a heart to heart session with James Riady. He brought a topic of ?The Next Step? in the meeting. James Riady emphasized the importance of parents role in guiding their child education. ?As a parent we need to work together with our partner. The thing is, we need to have the same vision that our partner have, and we can work it through. These factors are related, because our children will make their assumption about us. If we fight often, they would think that it is okay for them to do it. Therefore later it would be reflected on their character, ? explained James Riady. He even shared his experience with his parents and how his parents would treated him.

According to him, being smart is easy. Knowledge can be gained from everywhere. He illustrated it with a child using an Internet for a year. Just staying in front of the computer, he could know everything from it. But, knowledge is just a part of the factor of being successful. Without a good foundation of moral values, spirtual, and social skills, their characters would change and influence easily. With a good belief and foundation, a child would hold on to their ideology and do the right things. For example: being in the trisemester program, the children will be tested on their capability of self-disciplining themselves, and their persistency on doing a great job.

James Riady hopes that this meeting would be an insight that might help them to guide their children. He was grateful for the parents attentiveness on criticizing the university. For him, their inspirations are beneficial so UPH could grow more and give an impact to the society. (pris)
