As Indonesia?s presidential election is approaching, a seminar entitled ?Media War in Presidential Election Campaign? was held by the UPH?s School of Applied Communication Sciences on 23 June 2014. Dr. Benedictus Arnold S was the moderator of the seminar that was attended by six speakers with different political and media backgrounds. A stand up comedy skit performed by a Teacher College student opened the event, and the first session speakers were Prof. IndriaSamego (LIPI), Prof. Aleksius Jemadu (FISIP UPH) and Dr, Drs Victor Silaen, M.A.

Each speaker brings their own topic to present in the seminar; Prof. Aleksius Jemadu?s topic was Peace Campaign in a Christian Perspective. According to him we should not have any war or black campaign. Each candidate should compete fairly and we should have a peace campaign. ?We should have a correct understanding of politics, and a correct understanding of campaign. Why, because that understanding will influence and effect everything that we do that is connected to politics? he explained. Prof. Aleksius points out the importance of peace campaign and that the candidates should have a right mindset about power. ?If power becomes a personal ambition, then there will always be a temptation to do whatever it takes in order to become a victor?, explained him about the importance of peace campaign.

Budiarto Shambazy shared his experiences as a journalist during Soeharto’s regime

Budiarto Shambazy a senior journalist shared his experiences during the era of Soeharto?s regime and how the media were controlled by political parties. ?I was already working as a journalist during that era, and I reported the presidential election. At that time it was not a free press, we were still controlled and influence by the politicians. I remembered the journalists were told to gather for a briefing regarding on the coverage of the campaign. General Wiranto at that time asked us to gather around the table, he took out his gun and put it one the table. ?I think everyone already know what you can and cannot do? Wiranto said, what he did was to send a message to all journalists not to write anything negative or risky about Soeharto and his campaign or you know what will happen? he remembered.

After every session the moderator allows audience to ask questions to the speakers. One of them is Clarissa a communication major student. She asked whether ownership of media by politicians violates the rules in journalism code of ethics. Aditya L. Jono answered her question, ?What is stated in the journalistic code of ethics is to report balanced news. So the question is what is considered balance? Is it 60-40 or 90-10, every media has their own terms of balanced news. So until this day it is still a ?grey? area on whether the news on the media owned by politicians violates the journalistic code of ethics? he answered. (sha)
