HSSLP was followed by 25 participants from various high schools throughout Indonesia like Singapore International School, Raffles International Christian School, SMAN 1 Balikpapan, SMA Don Bosco Padang and SMAN 1 Manado. This program was also followed by several overseas schools such as Abbey College Cambridge, London.
HSSLP was divided into 2 categories, which are basic program on the first week and advanced program on the second week. Students could choose to take classes with Indonesian or English language for each category. The classes were not only taught by the lecturers of UPH Faculty of Law, but also by professional law practitioners.
HSSLP began with introductions between participants and the leaders of UPH Faculty of Law. To the participants, Dean of UPH Faculty of Law, Prof. Bintan Saragih said that to be a lawyer was not solely about winning a case in a court. But it?s about making an effort to find truth and justice. ?For me, losing a case but standing on the right side is better than winning a case but standing on the wrong side. This is a value that we teach to the law students in UPH, ? Prof. Bintan Saragih explained.
Meanwhile, John Riady, as the Executive Dean of UPH Faculty of Law said that law is the backbone of a nation. He emphasized the importance of the law field by giving the examples of world leaders with a law education background. ?Even in United States nearly all of its president has a law background,? said John.
Law student senate also introduced a variety of student activities. Throughout the week, students learned about various interesting topics about law from the lecturers of UPH Faculty of Law and they were able to discuss it with the mentors, which are the outstanding senior students.
For each program, there was a final project, where students was introduced and challenged to take a part on a case simulation. Students were assisted by their mentors and they learn how to create a legal argument. Next, they were given the opportunity to present their work in front of the lecturers who acted as judges, to get feedbacks and assessments. This final project was meant to train students to learn how to work together, be confident to present in front of the public as well as to train students to think critically. This final project is the core of the HSSLP program.
This program gained positive responses from most participants. Through this HSSLP, participants could gain the basic knowledge on law and convincing those who are interested in taking the law major in UPH.(seli/ca) |
