As part of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) open house event, high school teachers were gathered for a seminar in the F 202 room at UPH on 21 August 2014. The speaker for this seminar is Dhama Gustiar Baskoro, SIP.,M.Pd. he is the Instructional and Public Relation Librarian at UPH. The theme of the seminar for educators that day was ?To be an effective Educator for the Digital Native Generation?. The high school teachers that came were from; SMK Santa Maria, SMAK Tiara Kasih, SMA Kristen Calvin, SMA Regina Pacis, SMA Kristen Kanaan, SMA BHK, SMA Dian Harapan, St. John BSD, SMAK 7 Penabur, SMA Strada Thomas, SMA Permai, SMK Atisa Dipamkara, SMA High Scope.

 

Nowadays we are living in a modern and cyber world, learning and teaching have uses electronics to enhance a better and improved studying environment for the students. Students do most of their research and information seeking from the internet rather than the books. It is important to know how to teach effectively for the digital generation, as computer and internet uses are increasing and evolving by the time. One of the main topic that was discussed in the seminar is plagiarism. With open free information that is accessible on the internet, the possibility and chances of using other people?s work are higher. ?As teachers, you must teach your student on how to use citation and sources correctly so that they won?t commit plagiarism in their work. It is important on how you write quotes, footnote and references correctly,? explained Dhama.

Dhama also explained the reasons on why students commit plagiarism and said that many lecturers and professor still practice plagiarism. He gave an example of a lecturer form Universitas Gajah Mada that was proven to commit plagiarism on his work. ?Even teachers and lecturers sometimes still don?t know how to write references correctly. We must be able to teach the students the proper way on doing it so they are not accused on using other people?s work,?he said. Dhama also gave the teachers tips and trick on how to teach the students to quote correctly.

Fredy, a high school teacher from SMA Tiara Kasih found the seminar to be very appealing and useful especially in this digital era. ?It?s an excellent topic to be discussed, as nowadays students are lazier in their studies and they want things to be instant. Students prefer the use of internet rather than books for their work? he said. According to Fredy plagiarism is the enemy of education and we should all fight it together by giving severe sanctions to the committers.
