University is not just a place for students to learn, but to form them hollistically, to guide them in that process and to report student?s achievement to the parents. This commitment is shown by UPH Business School through the Parents Gathering program, to build up the good relationship between faculties, students and parents. This year, a similar event was held for the second time in May 27, 2015 at 17.00-20.00 WIB at the HOPE Building, UPH Karawaci for new students of UPH Business School, specifically for Management and Accounting major, who will begin their classes on August 2015. Aside from that, the students? parents from class of 2014 were also invited so they could keep the good relationship with the faculty and received a complete review of their children?s studies development.
This event consisted of the Faculty Introduction by Grace Salim, The Executive Director of UPH Business School, ?Empowering Connection: Students-Parents-Faculty? seminar by Dr. Gracia Ugut, the Executive Director of Lippo Education Initiatives, a message from UPH Chaplain, Rev. Mitchell Moore?Partnering with Parents for Holistic Education?, pre-program information and book retrieval for the new students from the class of 2015, which were held separately. This event was closed by a dinner with approximately 300 students and parents who attended the event.
At the Faculty Introduction session, Grace conveyed to the parents that going to college is the beginning of their children?s career ?Career starts in your university classrooms.? Hopefully, this would make the students realize the importance of these 3-4 years of their life, spent in the university as well as parents could also pay attention and support the process that their children undertake during college. Aside from that, Gracia Ugut also emphasized that a good communication with parents, could bring a child back to the right, path of life. ?It is important to have conversations, even if it?s a short one, with our children. This can prevent many unwanted things. In reality, parents are no longer the source of information for their children, but their peers are, so there must be a special approach from parents,? Gracia explained. There were many parents who asked questions, some of them were about the teaching system at UPH Business School, cheating issues and plagiarism, the unsuitable learning foundation in High school compared to the selected major, even more on the teaching materials at UPH Business School. The Head Department of UPH Accounting, Dr. Antonius Herusetya, M.M, Ak., CA., also answered some questions from the parents.
Afterwards, Rev. Mitchell Moore explained how important holistic education is. He explained that to produce the best graduates, it is not just about the exchange of information, but also the holistic education. ?A holistic education should develop the students? spiritual, character and knowledge. Everything begins from a true knowledge, which could be obtained through Christ (Col. 2:3),? said Rev. Mitchell Moore. He closed the session by adressing the importance of partnership between faculty and parents to educate the children holistically in order to bridge the existing gap. (el)
