On October 17, 2015, Dean’s Talk School of Design (SoD) took place in UPH in Building B-301, Painting Studio SoD. Dean’s Talk SoD aims to introduce faculty and courses available to parents and prospective students who are interested. Some departments in this faculty are majoring in Interior Design, Product Design, Visual Communication Design (DKV) and Architecture. This event is attended by the Dean of SoD, Kurniawan Elya Wibowo, S.Sn., M.A., and some professors representing each department, including Rio Ferdinand, S.Sn., M.T., lecturer of the Department of Product Design, Naldo Yanuar Heryanto, S.Sn, M.T., lecturer of Animation department DKV, Alfiansyah Zulkarnain, S.Sn., professor of Graphic Design Department of Graphic Design, Yenty Rahardjo, Vice Chairman of the Department of Interior Design, and David Hutama, ST, M. Eng, Head of Department (Kepala Jurusan) of Architecture.
Dean’s Talk began with remarks and a brief presentation of the Dean of SoD, Kurniawan Elya Wibowo, S.Sn., M.A. In his presentation, he delivered some important issues related to the proposing approaches and teaching the principles of SoD UPH, which is different from the existing School of Design in general. The keyword for teaching approaches of SoD UPH is interdisciplinary. According to Elya, in a changing world and increasingly connected to one another makes one discipline cannot stand alone; it requires other sciences as supporters. He also said that in order to answer the challenges of the changing world, SoD UPH offers more emphasis on teaching students to master the Critical Design Thinking and master at least some other sciences. “We want our graduates will not only become employees but the owner, to create jobs that will have employees, that is why at UPH we really insist on shaping the students way of think,” said Elya.
The next presentation was given by each department, the lectures, project work, and achievement of students of SoD so far. The lecturers also advised and requested the cooperation of the parents during the lecture later, in order to really give confidence to the faculty. Because of these design majors will require them to work harder compare to other majors. “Later they’ll often stay up, do the work at night because during the day they still want to play, or there may be those who have to cut wood or iron for their project. I see a lot of parents who feel sorry or pity their children and in the end helps them to make it. But we ask the parents to let them does it themselves. This is done for the good of the students so that they can be processed to understand each stage and groove making of each project,” said David, Head of the department of architecture.
