Dr. (HC) Mochtar Riady was present as a keynote speaker at the opening of the ‘Dr. Mochtar Riady Legal Fair (DMRLF) 2016 ‘ which took place on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at UPH campus, Lippo Village, Tangerang. In his speech, Dr. Mochtar conveyed a message related to the economies of Indonesia and that Indonesia should be prepared to compete in the era of Asean Economic Community (AEC).

In his presentation, he delivered the situation of intense competition among ASEAN country members in order to attract investors to their respective countries. One strategy to attract investors which is mostly done by country members of ASEAN is to loosen several investment requirements.

Unfortunately, Dr. Mochtar has a certain view that Indonesia it is still unable to embrace the entry of investors because there are still many individuals who misuse their authorities, causing the existence of additional costs which must be incurred to realize an investment in Indonesia. This resulted in higt-cost economy which actually makes the company or investor unable to suppress the level of efficiency.

“Indonesia experiences a ‘high cost economy’ because it is caused by the presence of parties who monopolize and do not behave properly,” Dr. Mochtar explained.

To that end, Dr. Mochtar asserted that if we want to compete in this AEC, we must overcome the ‘high cost economy’. As an example, he explained that China is heavily focused in infrastructure development to keep pace with economic growth, especially among ASEAN country members.

“But what is important to be acknowledged is that the basis of all of this is the law. In my opinion, people are poor not because they lack money but because they lack idea. Corruption exists not because there is no law, but because there is no moral. So if we are to speak about law, we have to discuss moral as well. Therefore, I hope that in this debate competition, everyone should think about how to build moral. Educated to be an intelligent, it should be complemented with moral. Without morality, we are nothing,? Dr. Mochtar said, ending his speech.

The message from Dr. Mochtar was warmly welcomed by all participants in the opening of DMRLF series consisting of university leaders, Dean and lecturers of UPH Faculty of Law, students, participants of the national level debate competition, as well as representatives of various legal institutions.
