Environmentally conscious should not just be a focus for environmental communities, instead students as young generation should also care and take action to prevent a further damaged earth. This topic becomes the focus in seminar, as part of The 8th EFiCn event series. This seminar was held on May 11, 2016 at UPH Karawaci Building D Level 5, with David Gunawan from PT Merindo Makmur and Tommy Tjiptadjaja, a Business Consultant, as the speakers.

David Gunawan, who brought the first session, focused more on waste that negatively impact the sustainability of the earth. In his session, David provided an exposition about the kinds of garbage according to UU n. 18/2008 consisting of B3 waste which is a toxic waste as a result of household, as well as medical waste. He proceeded with other types of waste such as waste from disasters, chunks of debris, waste that is unable to be technologically-processed, and non-periodic waste (the aftermath of demos, exhibits, community service).

David who is currently working at PT Merindo Makmur, a chemical company for industrial purposes, underlined that waste problem is growing due to several factors such as the increase in income and purchasing power of individuals. The increase in generated waste, the limitation in budget for waste management, as well as the principle of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) which is not running well result in mounting trash.

“Confronted with the fact that exists, all levels should certainly pay attention. Now the industry has also been doing a lot of EPR (Extended Producers Responsibility), and there are also those who convert waste into fuel and energy sources. Now then, for young people like you, what can you give? You must begin to think seriously, take action and commit to reduce waste, such as committing to the principles of 3Rs and also using creativity to process waste into other useful materials,? David explained.

In contrast to David, Tommy Tjiptadjaja who is also a Co-Founder of Poeima Creative Group, provided explanation that is focused on climate change.

“Climate change has become an urgent matter for all people and nations, since it is capable of causing extreme weather changes, increase in natural disasters and even considered to be a consistent factor of apocalypse. This ?sickness? of earth does not happen in linear, but exponentially or increasing rapidly. The important thing related to these facts is that the treatment performed must be through a multi-dimensional technique which involves economic, cultural, as well as spiritual aspects. Just as what is mentioned through the theme ‘Kill Your Ego’, this is good because it reminds us not to be selfish of our own interests. But together be a ‘Puzzle’ to bring change in an effort to slow down earth?s destruction,” Tommy said.

Aside from that, Tommy also stated that the implementation of 3R is a really good thing to be executed, but only doing 3R is not enough. It is important to achieve 4R, with Return to Earth as the last R which means that all of the materials produced must be returned to the earth. For example plastic, which is considered a waste producer that is difficult to decompose, should be sought an alternative.

Tommy said that one example of the efforts that can be done by Indonesia through two technologies created by Sugianto Tandio, President Director of PT Tirta Marta, namely Oxium 100% and Ecoplas which refers to plastics deriving from cassava. Both types are environmentally friendly plastic that are easily decomposed by microbes, so that the principle of ‘Return to Earth’ can be run. In addition, Tommy also mentioned that the selection of cassava is based on strategic reasons, which is to prosper Indonesian farmers.

“My principle is that I only live once, for that I want to do well, meaningful, and impactful. Through this opportunity, I would like to invite all of you to think holistically. The waste problem is not a simple thing, so it cannot be resolved in a simple way. All material certainly has its own positive and negative impact. That is why we should use it wisely. All of us can do this, Indonesia can change the situation if we are optimistic, committed, and keep on trying,” Tommy said to the EFiCn seminar participants (Mt)
