Along with the growth of tourism business, hotel establishment in tourist destination cities keeps on increasing. Even properties consultant, Colliers International Indonesia, estimates that by the end of 2016, Jakarta will have an extra 4,756 hotel rooms (source: Berita Satu.com). In response towards the issue, the Head of Pelita Harapan School of Hospitality and Tourism (STTPH), Dr. Diena M. Lemy, A.Par., M.M., said that hotel business is indeed tempting, because it can absorb a large number of workforce. But then, this condition needs to be ensued with Competent Human Resources, who are able to fulfill the need of the hotel industry.

This topic was brought during a talk show, Heartline Coffee Morning, through the theme ?Challenges in Establishing Hotel Business,? on September 20, 2016 at Maxx Coffee Benton Junction, Tangerang. There were three key speakers for this talk show; they are academician, practitioner and consultant.

?The hotel industry is a long-term industry, thus it needs people who are capable of giving their commitment for the best service. Because of that, educational institution has the responsibility to fulfill the need of competent Human Resources. Educational Institution should give a great effort in investing discipline and training students? mentality in order to survive within the real hostel industry,? explained Dr. Diena.

Dr. Diena also explained other challenges which will eventually be faced by Indonesia in preparing competent Human Resources, such as the lack of qualified teachers who has fulfilled Graduate Studies, the high amount of students who doesn?t choose hospitality and tourism major due to their passion, but merely to follow trends and the lack of government?s support and responds towards the need of teachers.

Other key speaker, Hendra Kurniawan, as the GM of Allila Hotel Tangerang, also agrees with Dr. Diena in the importance of passion and competence in the Human Resources for the Hotel Industry. Hendra sees that in the Hotel Industry, we always have to attend to the customers needs and provide them with satisfaction.

On the other side, Djoko Kurniawan as a consultant confirmed that there is a gap between the need and provision of competent Human Resources. In business practice, as an auditor and consultant, he often finds hotels that are not willing to provide their best services. Although in reality, during their studies, they must have been taught about the standards of service.

?In academic point of view, all graduates, such as STPPH?s, must be prepared with the competency in providing the best service. But then, when one is actually involved with a hotel management which prioritizes profits over all, that would not even think about giving the best service, it will surely affect them. This is the reason why even trained Human Resources could not provide the best service, because their principals collide with the culture and management in the said hotel,? said Djoko.

At the end of the session, Dr. Diena also emphasized the importance of competent Human Resource in order to enhance the development of Tourism Industry, through the synergy of education and industry.

?STPPH will keep on trying to bring students even closer with the Hotel Industry, by requiring students to create Feasibility Study as their final project. This Feasibility Study has to include market, technical, management and financial aspects. Moreover, they also encourage stakeholders of the hotel industries to not exploit the opportunities, but also to think carefully regarding every aspect involved, in order to provide the best service,? Dr. Diena then closed the discussion.
