Dean?s Talk: School of Hospitality and Tourism is not as Simple as We all Imagined

As key speakers, Dr. Diena M. Lemy, A. Par., M.M., Head of STPPH; Amelda Pramezwary, A. Par., M.M., Head of Hospitality Management; Yustisia Kristiana, S.ST, M.M., Head of Tourism Business Management; as well as Jeffry Widjaja, SE., Faculty Administration Director.

 ?Tourism School is not as simple as we imagined it. Hospitality is not just about washing the dishes or cleaning the room. Same thing goes with tourism, it?s not just about ticketing and traveling arrangement,? Dr. Diena explained.

She also explained that the students of STTPH are expected to become the masterminds who are able to attract tourists and develop tourism sites, along with the quality of tourism itself, by suggesting the best accommodation. Nowadays, there are lots of tourism sites with great potential, which has not been exposed. Thus, it becomes one of STTPH?s main concerns, because STTPH sees exploration and development of local tourism sites as a priority before talking about the international tourism sites.

Since the acknowledgement of School of Hospitality and Tourism in Indonesia on 2008, the opportunity to flourish the industry tourism itself is becoming vaster. STTPH itself provides high-standard facilities, where students are able to practice the knowledge they had obtained. Moreover, STTPH also has partnership with various restaurants, hotels and companies engaged in tourism, both in Indonesia and foreign countries. It was all to prepare STTPH graduates for the competition within the professional world, especially in dealing with ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

?Our hope is to produce graduates with great competency with adequate knowledge as well as good character and a strong faith. Hopefully, they can make Christ as the center of everything they work for. During their studies in STTPH, students are also prepared to have a strong mentality in order for them to be ready to face the professional world,? Dr. Diena added.

Moreover, Dr. Diena also stated that all STTPH students are obliged to have strong physique and mentality, because working in this field is not an easy matter.

Aside from explanation, another interesting thing about this Dean?s Talk is that participants were able to witness STTPH students, practicing their cooking skill, right beside the room which is only separated by glass.

Participants were very enthusiastic during the discussion. This was seen from their participation during the Q&A session. One of them is Allen, a High School student. 

?The event was really fun, I got a lot of new information. The facilities offered here are also really cool. So I really want to know more about all this,? said Aleen. (kl/mv)
