The production quality of mass media as an industrial entity is closely related with politics and business. This condition is relatable with the political economy approach which assumes that mass media?s content is affected by external powers, outside the media managers. This issue was raised during the Capstone course, by inviting the Chief Editor of Beritasatu TV, Don Bosco Selamun, on September 29, 2016, at Building D501 Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Karawaci. The Capstone course itself aims to prepare Communication students who are going to take their final project.
The topic for this Capstone course was opened for students from other departments. This seminar was attended by approximately 450 participants.
?Media has never lived in a vacuum,? said Don as he began his explanation.
He explained that media could live because the society gives them something to tell about. Media couldn?t live by itself, because media needs issues to be published.
?Media could differ from one another and sometimes contradictions are unavoidable. Sometimes, one event could have different exertion. This could happen because media is extremely dependent towards its own context and it couldn?t live in a vacuum,? he explained.
Don explained three things that determine the quality of a media. Firstly, the existence of a strong team and how a media is bounded by ethical codes. Secondly, it?s determined by a certain political vision within the media and lastly it is determined by the business interest within the media itself.
Media in this era has become an enormous industrial entity, it means that cost-profit-benefit calculation is an essential point. Aside from that, Don stated that media needs to be independent and objective. The important question is: can the influence of business as the entity of this industry, affect the quality of its product? Obviously, it is determined by the quality of the team at work.
?The quality of media is very important in order to ensure media?s credibility and this assurance could not be determined by a single person, but the work of the whole team, the data validation, the level of trust and transparency regarding the information delivered to the audience,? said Don as he ended the session.

?This seminar is very useful for communication students, because we have to know how our own media works in Indonesia. Through this seminar we could know the comparison between our media and the media in foreign countries. From the knowledge we got today, we could improve and develop our media in Indonesia,? said Stacy Laurentia, a 2014 Communication student. |
