Upon starting this year for UPH Symphony Orchestra and other activities in UPH, the Conservatory of Music (CoM) UPH presents Emperor Waltz, one of the common standard for New Year celebration in Vienna, in a show entitled ?BEETHOVEN AND THE ROMATICS?, which was held at D501 Auditorium UPH, January 26, 2017. The show was held with 45 musicians, 15 music instruments and 9 symphonies from 19th century musicians. This was the first time for Conservatory of Music (CoM) UPH to present a Symphony Orchestra where most of the members are CoM students.
According to Michael B. Mulyadi, S.Kom., M.A., who conduct UPH Symphony Orchestra concert during ?BEETHOVEN AND THE ROMATICS?, the quality of CoM UPH?s young musicians are one of the best and is very promising.
?This here is a representation of the rich talents that Indonesia have. We are very grateful for the opportunity and the trust given to us, to develop the potentials of these students. But on top of that, the tight selection process by CoM and its great programs also supports the discovery of the best talents who will later be prepared to be accomplished musicians,? Michael explained.
Students who joined the UPH Symphony Orchestra, did not just have talents and potentials in music, they also posses the dedication for their roles and function both within the orchestra and as an organization. We can clearly see this from the performance of this concert.

In an orchestra, players? understanding about the piece, the form that has to be created as a unity as well as the representation of composer?s idea is very important. Here, the understanding about the music and the flow of the performance has to be understood by each musician involved within the orchestra.
?Though so, I think there is one crucial thing: that is the willingness to communicate music to the audience. Every musician is not just cognitively involved in the process, but they are also expected to be affectively involved in touching the audiences? emotion,? he added.
In this case, both Michael and CoM UPH hopes that this orchestra can keep spreading its wings and to grow more, not just as a means of learning for the students but also as a pride and an asset of Universitas Pelita Harapan as a respected educational institution.
?I also hope that music can become a means to build communication and understanding between various communities in UPH. Hopefully, the Symphony Orchestra can also reach talents from other faculty and community around UPH so that it can be lab where community collectivity is created. The smallest step which we have implied is establishing the Symphony Orchestra, a vibrant and warm community and then, we slowly will take this community out from UPH premise in order to become an ambassador for UPH in a larger community,? said Michael.
The next concert will be held in June, along with Concerto Competition which will also be held by CoM. In this competition, the best talents in CoM can feature in a performance with UPH Symphony Orchestra. This concert will surely be an exciting experience for the orchestra and also the winners of the Concerto Competition, who will encounter rare experience, performing along with Symphony Orchestra.
