“Things are never quite as scary when you’ve got a best friend”, it seems that Bill Watterson’s quote which can represent the feeling of new students when they entering UPH on the first day and meeting their mentors.

Specifically, UPH provides mentors who have been selected and prepared, in order to guide new students especially in the event of UPH Festival. One mentor leads about 10 new students in each mentor’s group. These mentors are in charge to remind their member’s schedule to guide their lectures.

The process itself is not easy because from 400 prospective mentors who applied, approximately only about 200 mentors are selected. The early process is the Head mentor will select the Chief Mentors and after that Chief Mentors will pick the Mentors.

Furthermore, the selected mentor will be trained for 3 days and two nights twice in a row. Selected mentors have considered academically, but also spiritually, especially No SAD (Sex, Alcohol, and Drugs).

UPH also facilitates a special Mentor time session on the third day of UPH Festival, where new students or mentees gathered with their each mentor according to their respective groups. The groups scatter along the Food Junction to the edge of the Olympic size pool.

In this mentor time session, the members (mentee) are given three questions, such as a question about someone who impresses them and often helps in the term of being a best friend, other than that is the question of their ambitions in the next 5 to 10 years, and the last is; what UPH can help them to achieve their ambitions.

But, even though UPH Festival has been finished, their job as mentors will continue forever. To lead by example, as a mentor and good role model for new students in UPH. In accordance with the Mentor tagline from UPH, the People Grower, which means to guide and grow new students to a more true life for the glory of God.

Here are some testimonials from mentors and mentees (new students)

“Once as a freshman I was greatly helped by the mentor, let alone I come from the particular region. That is why I want to help new students especially my mentee with the same support. To feel what it feels to be helped and not alone. After the UPH Festival is over, I hope they can be successful, able to learn and be close to each other, still able to vent and share stories together.” ? Moses Leonardo, FK 2016.

“I want to become a mentor because I want to be a helper to my mentee, not only at UPH Festival, but I’m determined to be a helper and close even though the UPH Festival is over.

I want to be the first person to accompany and help them and to present UPH.

I used to think to be a mentor was easy, but it turned out the opposite way. Since the selection is from many applications. And not only accompany during UPH Festival, but also must lead them to the right direction. I hope the mentee will be the next mentor, with the motivation to be ?better’ than their mentor now. There is no such thing as a failed mentor, but a mentor is a lifetime process for the student”. ? Valen Valerie, Perhotelan 2016.

“The mentors are very considerate and kind. They remind us about the schedule for the next days and how the activities will be. In fact, they encourage other students who often come late to come earlier. They are very enthusiastic and willing to help, to be a ?parent’ for us. Before I joined UPH I thought UPH was a too luxurious campus, but it turns out that I like the environment. Many people are humble. Because like what True Christianity teaches us, it must ?from up to down’. Not only from the vision in written version but the evidence are from the little things too. This is far beyond my expectation before I join UPH.” ? Daniel Harianto, Fast.

“I am glad to get to know mentor better and be able to know their characters. It is nice to have someone who loves and care about us. The mentors are nice and not fierce at all. I thought seniors will be fierce but they really care about us. I hope it is not only in UPH Festival. But after it finishes we can still be close to each other”. ? Rania, Fisip.
