UPH Surabaya Law Students Show the Concern for Democracy and Elections

Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Surabaya Law Students become the representation of the young generation who care about general election (PEMILU) in Indonesia. This is demonstrated by the enthusiasm of their study of elections in the office of East Java Election Commission (KPU Jatim) which took place on September 5, 2017.

Based on the issues that spread about the election, the existing problems, and the lack of information related to the process of settling the various cases of the election becomes the primary reason for the UPH Surabaya Students of Law to go directly and follow the activities with enthusiasm.

This activity is part of the constitutional law study that are lectured by Agustin Widjiastuti, S.H., M.Hum., and Anthonius Adhi Soedibyo, S.H., M.Hum.     The group of students received the representatives of KPU Jatim, Choirul Anam, S.Pd. Division of Planning and Data, and Slamet Setidjoadi, SH., M.Si., Head of Law, Technical and Hupmas. Students are directly informed about the process of democracy and elections, such as the elections history. Besides, the students are also invited to watch the election movie in Rumah Pintar Pemilu (RPP) of Punakawan KPU Jatim and also invited to witness the electoral sphere and the simulation of the election.

With these activities, the students get much information and knowledge related to the election process, as well as various policy innovations in KPU, simultaneous regional elections, simultaneous elections, data updating, job performance, and others.

According to Agustin, as the follow-up action, KPU Jatim invites UPH Surabaya Students of Law to participate in the success of the East Java election, by joining the KPU team. This invitation was positively welcomed by UPH and will be discussed further for the technical. She also hopes that the students will be able to know and understand how the KPU is going, considering there are some parties who think KPU is not doing its job maximally when they are trying to carry out the task according to the rules.

“By involving directly in this electoral activity, the students are expected to be the facilitator of the KPU to the wider community. Not only that, we can also give input to KPU based on the observation. Of course, this is also a form of the academic contribution to the community, “said Agustin.

This activity is also strongly supported by the Rector of UPH. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, M.Eng.Sc. On a separate occasion, he stated that UPH is committed to always contribute to society and country in various fields. This is also the reason for the Rector in taking the policy to unite the four campuses -UPH Lippo Village Karawaci, STPPH, UPH Surabaya, and UPH Medan- into one institution with the main campus in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang. This unification aims to make UPH as a whole to be able to increase the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of institutions and learning process.

“Lectures at UPH campuses in Surabaya and Medan will continue to run, even expected to grow more in accordance with the local needs. We all hope that this unification can make UPH a distinguished Christian university in Asia, even the world, “said Rector of UPH.

FH UPH Surabaya since August 2017 has obtained an A accreditation based on DECREE NO. 0737 / SK / BAN-PT / Akred / S / III / 2017. Acquisition of this accreditation must be maintained by continuously improving the quality of teaching, research and community service (PKM).

Not only has Bachelor Degree of Law study program (Prodi), UPH Surabaya also strengthened with Accounting, Management, and Magister Law Studies. UPH is committed to improving the quality of teaching and educational facilities of all study programs in Surabaya. Currently, UPH is preparing to move the campus to the new location with the full range of facilities.
