UPH Electrical Engineering in accordance with its mission to produce the professional undergraduates by applying an integrated curriculum of the development of qualified science and research held a public lecture on Tuesday, 13 February 2018.
The public lecture entitled Technologies for Disaster Early Detection: Sensors and Instrumentations invited Dr. Bambang Widiyatmoko, M.Eng; an expert in Research Center for Physics, Indonesian Institute of Science from Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI). In this seminar, some technology products to predict and anticipate a disaster were presented. One of them is a disaster censor, it is a result of the research by Mr. Bambang and LIPI team.
The lecture that took place in Building B room 547 and attended by approximately 60 participants was also one of the cooperation of UPH and LIPI. One of the MOU that has been agreed by Electrical Engineering UPH and LIPI commits to research collaboration and teaching that will contribute to the community, both in practical work in LIPI and also the provision of LIPI facilities that can be used by the students and lecturers for the research.
Dr. Ir. Henri P. Uranus MT, the dean of Electrical Engineering UPH also explained that in electrical engineering itself, periodically will be held a lecture by guest to deliver wider knowledge to the students.
?So we invite speakers from other places who can share something useful and interesting for the students. Accidentally, we also have MOU with LIPI. Therefore, if the students want to do their final project, they can do the practical work in LIPI. It simultaneously makes the implementation of MOU. It also makes the students to get knowledge about research from the experts of LIPI? added Henri.
Furthermore, Henri also explained the importance of the seminar about this censor because everything that has been conveyed in the seminar has many relevancies to what the students of electrical engineering study, such as: optic, fiber, laser, processor, microcontroller and solar-powered system, all of them come from electrical research.
?We expect that with this seminar, the students are more serious to learn deeper about electrical science to answer the needs, for example, related to disaster and even more important, the students can contribute in making a tool for the final project or deciding to be researchers in the future,? said Henri.
In line with this, Bambang as a researcher also feels that he has the responsibility to disseminate what has been done and produced to the wider society, one of them in the academic area, is for the students.
?Moreover to motivate them, a research does not always have to be advanced, the most important thing is how we do the research well but one day it will be used by the community so that many young people especially students want to be researchers. Because in Indonesia, the researchers are needed. I have seen the facilities in UPH laboratory and the applications are good, it is just about how to combine the problems in the society so that the solution can emerge? said Bambang.
This guest lecture discusses the sensors used for the early detection of landslides that developed by LIPI which have been implemented for Jakarta – Bandung railway line, and also sensitive tsunami sensors by utilizing laser interferometry.(tm)
