At the election on April 2014, young voters will become a determining factor because their numbers are very significant (30% of total voters). Apart from that condition, on Tuesday (11/3) UPH Students Executive Board held a talk show themed ?Smart Voters are Future Determiners? to educate young voters inside campus about the election. The event was attended by Senate leaders from a variety of campuses around Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) including Betty Epsilon Idroos as a representation from KPU Jakarta, Prof. DR. Tjipta Lesmana M.A. and Prof. Aleksius Jemadu, Ph.D. who is lecturer from Faculty of Social and Political Science UPH, along with Pangeran Siahaan as the representation from Ayo Vote.
Prof. Aleksius Jemadu, Ph.D., Dean of Faculty of Social and Political Science UPH, presented three significant agendas that a leader has to master which include state building where a leader has to be able to build a corruption-free bureaucracy, problem nation building where a chosen leader has to be capable of managing Indonesia?s diversity while maintaining unity, as well as economic development where a leader must have a global economic strategy. The future leader should come from a strong party to be qualified on creating continuity in this government.
Prof. DR. Tjipta Lesmana M.A., politic communication expert and UPH Communication lecture predicted the politic situation during 2014 election. The expert thinks that this year?s election will be a very heated election where two sides will clash. There?s a possibility that there will be a great deal of cheating, manipulation and even violence. Even so, he suggested young voters to vote and do not refuse to vote (golput). The election must be conducted honestly and fairly as the standard of democracy in this country.
As a form of political education to the young voters, Ayo Vote, a non-profit organization aimed to give a basic political understanding to young generation, gave an introduction to political parties through a guessing game about logos from various parties. From the simulation, it became apparent that there are still a large number of young voters inside campus who haven?t recognized the symbols of parties participating in the election. According to Pangeran Siahaan, an informant from Ayo Vote, ?A lot of young generations are still ignorant when it comes to their home country. If we don?t know which parties participating in the election and who are the candidates for prospective members of legislation, how can we choose? We must find out by utilizing the Internet and social media. From there we can know which candidate is competent and which are not?, explained Pangeran. He also claimed that going golput doesn?t have to be something that needs to be followed-up with criminal penalty like in Australia. He gave young voters a suggestion to vote even if it is not mandatory.
Explanations concerning what kind of criteria a leader should have to be qualified in winning the election were further clarified by Betty Epsilon Idroos, the representation from KPU Jakarta. She stated that teenagers have a substantial power because they are critical, communicative and dynamic. She explained the steps a voter needed starting from the election until the post-election period. She suggested for the students to visit www.kpu.go.id to get a clearer idea.
At the closing of the event, students and young voters were reminded to use their voting rights on April 9th 2014.
