Modular Living Gadget, a unique work from 5 UPH Interior Design students amazed the visitors at Desain.ID 2012 exhibition last week. Christina Indraningsih, one of the team member who got involved in the making of the work explained about the idea of this work. ?At first we thought about the small concept, which was not big, but it could meet our primary needs, like eating, resting, and working. Then we started to make an idea about living gadget, that could meet those primary needs,? she said.

The materials used for Modular Living Gadget were the eco friendly and reusable materials, such as wood. They prefer used wooden elements more than steel. For lighting, they also used LED in order to save electricity and it was also simpler. Modular Living Gadget, whose making process took less than a month, got positive responds from the visitors. ?There were a lot of visitors who asked whether our work was for sale or not. There was also a visitor who wanted to use the living gadget for dormitory needs,? Christina added.

Besides Christina, 4 other students who also got involved in the making of Modular Living Gadget were Marina Tjandra, Jeanne Junita Pertiwi, Angela Johanna Sudarma, and Stephanie, all from batch 2010, and Elaine Steffany as their advisor. According to Elaine, Modular Living Gadget was completely personalized based on the individual. ?These primary needs, although they have been compacted, we could still add other module, so it still could be designed creatively according to its functions,? she said.

Those five students admitted that it had been a pleasure to work together to make it. ?At first I thought whether we were ready or not to run this project, but the lecturers? help played important role for us, so we made it. The work then has been completed, and it turned out to be influential for others, whereas at first we thought it would only influenced for some people like designers,? Marina said. Other team members also claimed that they got more knowledge and a great experience, especially experience to work in a team, where they could share ideas.

By doing this project, students could practice directly what they had learnt in class. The unique thing was they directly involved the designers for this project; it was no longer a coursework, so it was felt more real. ?This project is made as closely as possible, because we wanted to show that the one who made this is a real designer, we wanted to show others that this is something new,? Elaine explained. ?From the beginning, I emphasized to them that this project is real, where their names would be listed as the designers, whether the project is failed or succeeded. So do not be afraid to start from now,? Elaine added. (ft)
