SLC UPH: Held a Quiz Competition for Junior High School Students Around the Campus

Educating the next generation would be done through a quality education. The realization needs cooperation from various parties. Recognizing the importance of education for students? future, UPH Department of Student Services, through a program called Service Learning Community, routinely entered the public service project designed and run by students. This year, there are two themes of the project, which are to motivate students? interest in learning and caring the environment.

“Shine Like Star” was chosen as the theme of service project to junior high schools which are located around UPH campus. This program aims to motivate students to study hard, one of them by following the quiz competition.

The competition atmosphere

Five schools that participated in this event were SMPS Sunan Bonang, SMPN 2 Curug, SMP Muhammadiyah 5, SMP PGRI 396, and SMP 1 Kelapa Dua. Each school sent 25 students and three of them as representatives of their schools in the quiz competition held at UPH basketball court (28/4).

Questions that asked were about the field of exact sciences, social, and general knowledge. “To organize the materials, we have a special team that masters this field. They are from Teacher College student,” explained Lydia Fransisca (Law School student class of 2006) as the head of the committee.

“The event aims to motivate the junior high school students to learn and make achievements, also to increase competitiveness and expand their knowledge in all fields of science,” she added.

All students seem to have great passion and enthusiasm in following this competition. They need one to two weeks to prepare for the quiz and a team of cheerleaders to prepare yells, which also be contested. Throughout the event they continue to give encouragement to his colleagues with applause and shouts of encouragement.

“This event is good, give a positive impact for children. Hopefully, next year this event could be held again with improved material and performance. Also invite schools outside Tangerang,” said Dede Herly, a teacher from SMPN 2 Curug.

Similar comments also brought up by Endang Setiawan, a teacher from SMPS Sunan Bonang, “Incredible. Valuable experience for our school. My hope is to be held again next year. Materials can include the knowledge of school subjects.”

SMP 2 Curug was the first champion, followed by SMPS Sunan Bonang as runner up, SMP 1 Kelapa Dua as second runner up, SMP PGRI 396 in the forth level and SMP Muhammadiyah 5 in the fifth level. The yells winner is achieved by SMP Muhammadiyah 5.

Vidi Aldiano

The winners get a package of educational books for schools from Elex Media Komputindo, trophy and prizes, cash, and stationery. Vidi Aldiano also enliven the event, whose hits are very compelling for junior high students and the spectators.

In the next two months, the Service Learning Community will conduct service learning mission of saving coral reefs. Locations are planned in the water around Banten. For this program they will cooperate with some universities in Jabodetabek and organizations that care about the environment. (Cyn)
