The pros and cons of death sentence in Indonesia is an important and interesting topic to be discussed from different points of view to enlarge students? knowledge.
The Student senate of UPH Law department (FH UPH) yesterday, January 28 2009, held a talk show with the theme ?pros and cons of death sentence?, inviting law experts and practitioners . Among them were Todung Mulya Lubis, S.H, LLM, as the representation of human rights organization, Asep Iwan Iriawan, SH, M.H., representing Constitutional Law, and Dr Rudy Satrio, SH, MH representing academicians. The RCTI presenter, Chantall De La Concheta, hosted this event.
Two out of the three speakers agreed with death sentence. Conversely, Todung Mulya Lubis disagreed with the concept of death sentence because he thought that the sentence would not teach any lesson to the criminal and it violated human rights. According to him, law certainty is important, but there should be justice.
Meanwhile in Indonesia, justice has not been carried out fully. A participant who was asking a question about discrimination in death sentence raised this issue. He stated that there was a criminal who had been in jail for 21 years yet had not been executed, while there were some people who did not have to wait too long to get their execution. Responding to the question, the speakers admitted the imperfect implementation of criminal law in Indonesia.
The pros and cons of death sentence in Indonesia is an important and interesting topic to be discussed from different points of view to enlarge students? knowledge. Besides the experts? opinions, a video, recording a comment from the family of a death-sentence criminal was displayed to share their feelings and experience regarding death sentence implementation.
The talk show that took place in UPH basketball court was attended by hundreds of students of Student Organization of UPH Law Department. This event aimed to broaden the students? horizon on criminal law issues, especially on death sentence in Indonesia, and to train the students to develop critical thinking and their outspokenness in stating their opinions.
