The 5th Young Talented Guitarist Concert

For the 5th time, the Conservatory of Music of Universitas Pelita Harapan (CoM UPH) held a concert for Talented Young Guitarists to introduce the classical guitar specialization to the public. This concert was held on Friday, October 7, 2016 by Benny M. Tanto, Classical Guitar Lecturer in CoM UPH, who is also known as a Guitar Maestro in Indonesia and the international world.

This concert was a showcase to present Classical Guitar students from the Conservatoru of Music of UPH. In this concert, students did not just perform, but this concert was also a part of their learning and how they practice the skills they learned in class, such as interpretation, Classical Guitar Virtuoso Technique and also Solo Guitar Technique. Same thing goes with the Ensemble and Guitar Orchestra; players are not just required to master the accurate technique, but they also have to understand their respective instrument.

?The most interesting thing about this 5th concert is the music, for example, some of the performances combined jazz and pop, which was done with the hope that the audience are pleased. From the performers? perspective, this time I also invited a number of musical education institution, such as IKJ (Institut Kesenian Jakarta), UNJ (Universitas Negeri Jakarta) and several players from music course as well as individuals musicians,? Benny explained.

Through this concert, Benny wants to lift classical music as an educational entity as well as source of entertainment, enjoyable by all kinds of people.

?I would like to ward a stereotype where people see music school as a bleak future. Though in fact, there are lots of CoM UPH alumni who have become successful, both in music or other career such as teachers, performers, etc.,? he added.

This concert served its audience with a selection of classical music in solo, duet, guitar ensemble and many more. The performers for this concert consisted of CoM UPH students, alumni as well as several guest stars, such as Soprano Vocal by Febby Bernadette, a student of Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) as well as Francisco Arief, a guitarist who was also the South East Asia Champion.

After this concert, Benny has made some plans to conduct a Solo Guitar Concert, where he will be releasing his new solo album in May 2017. He hopes that he could keep promoting the development of classical music and the growth of competent musicians in Indonesia through adequate music education and techniques.

The first concert for the Talented Young Guitarist was held on 2006 at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, and was continued with a second (2006) and third concert (2007) at Erasmus Huis and the fourth concert (2010) was held at the Goethe Haus.

The featured piece for this 5th Talented Young Guitarist Concert are Concerto En Ut Major No. 23 (A. Vivaldi), this piece was made for orchestra, but it was arranged to be played by a piano and guitar duet; Prelude & Arragonaise (G. Bizet), this piece was originally made for opera, but it was arranged to be played by guitar ensemble; lastly, there was Habanera, which also became the closing for the concert, this piece was sung by a Sporano, played by percussion and a piano, with guitar ensemble as accompaniment.

Through this concert, hopefully, people can know classical music better and also appreciate classical music by supporting music education towards its development in the future (rh/mv)
