Pastor Sucipto Subeno Left the New Students with a Spiritual Message on the Opening Chapel of UPH Welcoming of New Students

About more than 3,600 new students from all faculties of the Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) were welcomed on the 23rd UPH Festival, held on August 18 to 20, 2016, at the Lippo Village Campus, Karawaci, Tangerang. The welcoming began with a worship service at the Grand Chapel, which encourages students to ponder upon the meaning of the change of status they have to gone through, from a High School student to a University Student.

The Spiritual Message was given by Pastor Sucipto Subeno, a pastor and a lecturer at the STRI Jakarta and STT Reformed Injili International Jakarta, who encouraged students to understand the four aspects of life they would need to be a real university student and an adult. Those four aspects are spirituality, mentality, intellectuality, and skill.

But as he has explained, spirituality and mentality are the most important aspect. Because when someone leaves their spirituality behind, they are no longer human, at least no wholly. The second aspect, mentality, is an aspect that has to be molded correctly, to ensure that each individual could have a strong mindset, capable of overcoming all sorts of problems in life. Aside from that, Pastor Sucipto also said that, if we have the right mentality, then we will become a mature individual, who is willing to sacrifice their life for other people.

The other two aspects are intellectual and skills. Regarding this, Pastor Sucipto explained that intellectuality is not merely about knowledge and remembering some words. It?s about how somebody understands something. After fulfilling the three aspects, then it would be important for one to work on their skills and use them to be a blessing for others.

?This often becomes the failure of education; that is when they did not educate the individuals in a holistic way, leaving just the intellectuality and skills as the most important aspect. The orientation of learning should be to form one?s intellectuality, with the influence of spirituality and mentality, for it to be a blessing by the very end,? added Pastor Sucipto.

Moreover, Pastor Sucipto emphasized on the mindset of a university student.

?A university student has to think about what do they have to do to get back and to stay within the truth, which only exist within Christ and to not leave God,? he explained.

There were two things that we have to understand if we have ever thought about leaving God. First, leaving God is leaving truth itself, because God is the ultimate source of truth. Second, leaving God is like leaving love, because God is love. That love of God is the one that enables us to do something, to drive us to do good things.

At the end, Pastor Sucipto wanted to remind new students to learn how to think and to live their life holistically by balancing the four aspects. ?As long as you study in university, you have to keep on working and balancing those four aspects to live a life as a blessing,? said Pastor Sucipto, before he ended his message with a prayer.
