UPH Christmas Action 2014 was not only held inside the UPH environment, instead it was also done by sharing with the community in need surrounding UPH. Through this Christmas Action, all UPH employees could reflect the goodness and the work of God in their life throughout 2014 to the people around UPH so that they too are able to give thanks to God through UPH?s presence in their midst.
UPH External?s Christmas Action 2014 was held in Dutasia Foundation Reading Garden, Bencongan, on December 17, 2014. Some of UPH staffs? representatives attended the External Christmas Action, including Jonathan L. Parapak, UPH Rector, Connie Rasilim, VP1, Feterriadi, Senior Director of HRD, Budi Yuwono, and Albert Mitchell Moore, Chaplain of the UPH.
Dutasia Foundation Reading Garden, Bencongan, is a house of learning for underprivileged children which accommodates about 110 children. It is one of the service implementation (SOW) of UPH Teacher College (TC) to teach underprivileged students. Witnessing the inadequate venue and learning materials needed for an effective learning process, UPH was moved to help Dutasia Foundation Reading Garden through External Christmas Action 2014. In addition, this place has also become one of UPH students? destination to do community service (Service Learning). Under these circumstances, the committee opted for Dutasia Foundation Reading Garden as the place to carry out the External Christmas Action 2014.
External Christmas Action 2014 was actually already underway since December 5, 2014, where competitions for the children were established, such as vocabulary, reading, coloring, and mathematics competition held at UPH Building B, 6th Floor. On December 17, 2014, UPH visited Dutasia Foundation Reading Garden to celebrate Christmas with the children and help inaugurate the physical development of the Reading Garden.
The form of supports provided by UPH includes the construction of a pavilion and restrooms when children used to learn in an open field; Power supply which were supported by the Faculty of Electro with the making of Solar Panel; Renovation of the Reading Garden?s rooms with damaged fan, ceiling and roof replacements, repainting and replacement of rotted door; Replacement and additional equipment such as a new bookcase, procurement of new and qualified reading books, and 40 units of new folding tables.
External Christmas Action 2014 event was opened with remarks by Jonathan L. Parapak, Rector of UPH. He expressed his amazement on the fact that Dutasia Foundation is not only found in Bencongan alone, but also scattered in other areas around Tangerang which already holds about 300 underprivileged children, which is approximately equal to 3 branches of Sekolah Lentera Harapan. This is also his first visit to Dutasia Foundation Reading Garden, Bencongan, and he was very grateful that on this Christmas, he could help others who are less capable. ?UPH Employees? Social Service is part of our job as Indonesian people to participate in promoting education in the community. Education is the way to do the transformation. I used to be a village boy, but by education, I am now able to become the rector of UPH,” Rector said.
Ibu Murni, a representative of the Dutasia Foundation, expressed her gratitude for the help from UPH. Since 2006, Dutasia has been providing home learning for underprivileged children. These are not separated from the hands of God who give way. Despite facing many challenges, it proves that God is never silent. Ibu Murni said that through this foundation, children are taught the skills and creativity so that in the long run, they can work and be independent. In fact, there are already some who are now working as an craft assistant and even become a craft teacher.
The event was followed with ribbon cutting by Jonathan L. Parapak, Rector of UPH, as a form of Dutasia Hall inauguration. Then, a Dutasia Foundation Reading Garden?s survey was also done. The delegations of UPH were also entertained by performances from Dutasia?s children. They performed Betawi?s Ondel-ondel Dance, Ampar-ampar Pisang, and a Percussion performance. At the end of the event, the winners of the competitions held on last Friday (5/12), ranging from vocabulary, reading, coloring to Mathematics competitions, were announced. (ca)
