In Monday, June 16, 2014, Design Expo 2014 was officially opened. The opening was carried by Zuraidah Ibrahim, Kemenparekraf Director of Design and Architecture at building D 502 UPH campus, and was followed by a talk show entitled ?The Role of Government in Advancing The World of Design and Architecture Education in Indonesia.?

In her speech, in front of over 200 students of UPH School of Design (SOD), she explained the government?s efforts in supporting Indonesia?s creative industry through education. According to him, creative economy absorbs 10% of the workforce in Indonesia. Architecture and design is one thing that contributes significantly. Government, scholars, industries and creative actors are parties that contribute to this achievement.

Zuraidah reminded that students need to continue to be innovative and creative. They were told not to be satisfied only with what they can achieve inside the campus, or just with what they can achieve by adopting ideas from other countries. Students need to try expansion to other countries instead, and if possible our designs can ?invade? another country or being a design trend in the another country.

?We need creative people. For that, Kemenparekraf collaborate with the Department of Education and Culture, including in terms of the availability of educational facilities, teaching systems and curriculum,? she said.

?I need to tip my hat for UPH students works that I?ve seen at the Design Expo 2014 exhibition. Very impressive! Probably you students need to opened insights on entrepreneurship, so when you graduate one day, you would be even more motivated to create jobs. On the government side, we will support on creative entrepreneur products so that it may distributed abroad. For example, by advancing product?s quality, building distribution networks and creating standards for creative industry,? she added.

On the occasion, Zuraidah also socialized an event held by Kemenparekraf, which is ?Reka Baru Desain Indonesia (RBDI) 2014?. This is an event where there will be a selection for the innovative design of the nation. The selection aims to discover and map the potential works of the designer (creator) to be given the opportunity to grow and develop optimally. Like being included in international exhibitions, or probably they could produce goods for market consumption.

Regarding the event, Zuraidah encourages UPH School of Design students to participate. ?This event is not a competition, but it is made to seek ?the hidden gems?, which is both creative works and it?s creator, so that they may level up to the industrial field. I hope those gems emerge from UPH,? she said. (rh/seli)
