UPH-ERIA Distinguished Lecture Series held their fourth and last lecture series on June 11, 2013 at ERIA Annex Office, Jakarta. This lecture session was the closing series of lectures, which has started since February 2013. This time, UPH-ERIA titled the session ?Trade Rules and Monetary Policy: Implication to ASEAN Member States? because several governments have chosen to (allegedly or openly) influence the value of their respective currencies (China, USA, Switzerland, Japan) over the last few years. It has led some observers to call for binding rules of these kinds of interventions.
This lecture session was presented by Simon Lacey, MTIC Academic Director of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) whose main areas of expertise are international economic law, WTO accession, trade development and trade negotiations and Dr. Dionisius A. Narjoko, Researcher of ERIA as the discussant and emphasized on the implications for trade and investment of ASEAN member states. The discussion was about the various international rule-making and policy options that could be available to address any long-term and severe imbalance that such currency interventions could cause, as well as the possible implications of such rules for ASEAN Member States.
The distinguished lecture series 2013 was organized jointly by ERIA and UPH and the activities aim to provide a platform for knowledge transfer and meaningful discussions on topics related to global economics, trade negotiations and international law, and to make a further contribution in realizing the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015. |
