UPH once again actualize their mission to be a global campus by bringing Luke Gillespie, a professional pianist from Indiana University, USA. Luke Gillespie came to Indonesia for several days, and he spent 3 days to visit UPH. He held a concert at UPH on Wednesday, May 9th 2012. The concert, which was opened for public, was not only enthused by UPH students, but also enthused by other music lovers. ?The concert was great. He showed us a unique technique in playing the piano, which not every pianist can do, and he did it during the concert?, said Abram, one of the audiences. On that concert, Luke combined classical music and jazz.
?The audiences were very kind?, said Luke when he was asked about the concert. Furthermore about his great and unique technique, Luke said that the key was a lot of practicing and listening. ?You have to listen what you play so you can make adjustment. For example, the hand cannot play what the ear cannot hear. The hand will only play what the ear can hear. If you cannot hear it, so you cannot play it. That is what the students need to practice. They need to practice with their ear when they play?, Luke explained.
The next day after holding a concert, which was Thursday, May 10th 2012, Luke shared his knowledge and experience in a seminar. ?This morning I shared about the history of solo jazz piano and in the afternoon I?m going to talk about the intersection of jazz and classical music together, jazz influence in classical, classical influence in jazz, both of them?, Luke said.

On the third day, Luke Gillespie gave master class in UPH. The master class was opened for UPH students who wanted to be directly observed by Luke. ?I am very curious to hear the students play and what kind of interpretation they have?, said Luke. Every student who joined in the master class got 25 minutes to learn directly from Luke Gillespie. (ft)
