“Television is still the main reference for entertainment and information in Indonesia,” said Arif Suditomo, Editor in Chief Seputar Indonesia, in the ?TV dalam Lanskap Media Indonesia? seminar held at UPH today. According to Arif, the cost factor is the reason why people in Indonesia prefer to consume TV, because watching television, does not cost or free. Watching soap operas on television or entertainment programs are the cheapest entertainment rather than spend time with other entertainment such as shopping in the mall, watching movies in cinema or a music concert. In a seminar attended by students of FISIP UPH, Arif explains the prospects and challenges faced by the media industry. Currently Indonesia has an average of 6-7% economic growth per year, where per capita income is USD 3000. This encourages the growth of middle class. Consumption level is increasing and the absorptive capacity of domestic industry strengthened, including the media industry. Nowadays, there are some platform in the media industry, such as local television, internet, etc that encourage many new opportunities which born every day in this creative industries. Arif Suditomo said, “students can take advantage of many opportunities, not only jobs but also in fighting for ideals. You can give your ideas in this industry.” He also added,” to be able to join the RCTI there are 3 main requirements: minimum GPA 3.0, able to speak in English, and have a good attitude.” Seputar Indonesia goes to campus is one of social responsibility from Seputar Indonesia RCTI in engaging with the academic community. In 2011, the Seputar Indonesia visits some college in the Jabodetabek and UPH is the fourth campus. This event consists of three sessions of seminars, discussions, and ended with a workshop. In the workshop, students got the opportunity to learn how to be a good news anchor, how to write news or coverage, and some tips about journalism. This seminar and workshop occurred about 5 hours in D502, attended by the students majoring in science communication. According to Deborah Simorangkir, Head of Department of Communication Studies, students got a task from the lecturer associated with the topic of the seminar, in order to push students involved actively.
