Four students from Food Technology Department of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) took the first place at the 1st Indonesian Food Bowl Quiz Competition 2011 sponsored by PATPI, HMPPI, and Himitepa (IPB- Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences). Those outstanding students are Jovian Bunawan, Adeline Kartika Putri, Steffi Agustine Chandra, and Meiliana Lukman.

A total of approximately 78 teams from various public and private Indonesian universities joined the competition. In the Final round of the National competition held  on Saturday, May 21, 2011, the  UPH team succesfully defeated the three other teams from the Institut Pertanian  Bogor and Universitas Brawijaya Malang.

The UPH team qualified for the semifinal and final rounds using wildcard selection.  At first, the students were not convinced that they could win the event. ?We didn?t have enough time to prepare ourselves for the competition. Steffi and Meiliana had exams at that time. Adeline and I had already started working, so it was very difficult for us to manage preparation time,? Jovian explained. The opponent?s superiority in the previous rounds also made them less confident. ?We didn?t expect to win this competition,? reported Adeline.

Regarding their strategy, Adeline described , ?We found the most important thing is to be calm and not to rush when answering the questions.? The students believe that the knowledge obtained from Food Technology Department UPH, greatly helped them to win the competition. ?UPH Food Technology is not inferior if compared to the Food Technology departments of other universities,? Jovian said. ?We are advantaged because at the international stream UPH, all classes are fully conducted in English.  We are used to using  English terms so we did not have any problems answering questions which was in English,? Meiliana stated.

After winning the national round competition, the UPH team will represent Indonesia in the international level at the ASEAN Undergraduate Quiz Bowl Competition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 16-17, 2011. Steffi stated : ?For the next round, we will try to prepare ourselves much better to bring the good name of UPH and Indonesia in ASEAN.? (dee)
