Einstein characters in a clown costume seemed to welcome the Discovery participants, on January 17th to 21st, 2011, at UPH main campus Karawaci. The event was organized by the Student Senate Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) is the second time held.  The event was divided into two competitions, namely Quiz Science and Mathematics, and Mathematics Olympiad.

DISCOVERY name -which means DIscerning SCience thrOugh ValiancE & integRitY- deliberately chosen because this event aimed, is to explore and discover the potential in science and mathematics at high school students.

According to Helena Margaretha Ph.D., Head of the Mathematic Department, science that has long been carried by people, now has begun to less desirable, when in fact it is important in the advancement of technology and civilization. People strong in science and math needed for state security from the threat of crises, such as the food crisis and financial crisis. Indonesia actually has a lot of students who are gifted in science and mathematics. Ironically, many of them are chose to pursue that does not match his talent. Many who choose to take courses in science / mathematics abroad, later worked in the others countries. Indonesia is left worse off by the loss of talented people or not developed talents in science and mathematics.

?Through this event, expected to increase awareness among the younger generation on the talents they have, and give motivation to those who have talent in science and mathematics to contribute to the progress of society, especially in Indonesia,? said Helena.

“This year we invite more schools than last year, a total of 200 schools, which are in Java, and we also held an exhibition during the event,? said Vicky Setiawan, chairman of the committee.

The total prize is Rp.20.000.000, 00, and the competition was quite challenging. Participants must pass through several stages, ranging from the provision, the semi-finals, until the final.

For Science Quiz Competition, contested subjects are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Each group consisted of three people, and after a few rounds, chosen 7 teams representing their respective schools.

Meanwhile, Mathematics Olympiad is an individual competition, where the participants come from schools in various areas such as the high school in Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java.

The winners of quiz competition were SMAK 1 Penabur, as a first winner, consisting of Aaron R. Sugito, Anthony and Stephen, another team from SMAK 1 Penabur, as the second winner, consisting of Marsela Limesa, Joshia Mangala and Marsha C. Wibowo, and SMANU MH Thamrin, as the third winner, consisting of Radhian F. Armando, Samuel L. Putra and Tiroy Junita.

As for the Mathematics Olympiad winners, were Stephen Sanjaya, the first winner from SMAK 1 Penabur, Johan Chrisnata, the second winner from SMAK Gading Serpong and Raymond Tanadi, the third winner from SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta.

 “Although this Mathematics Olympics, is the first time held by UPH, but the competition is quite interesting and nice. For the next, the questions need to be improved to make it more challenging “said Johan Chrisnata, one of the winners.

Each winners get cash prizes and certificates. For the first winner is also awarded permanent trophy and rotating trophy.
