As a country with more than 214 million people, Indonesia requires alot more specialist doctors to handle brain surgery cases.

This situation is getting more pathetic because the medication process of this disease takes a lot of time and money. Moreover, not all hospitals are ready to conduct these operations because of the limited tools and specialists. Most hospitals, especially in the rural areas, are just conducting operations for the accident trauma. Siloam Hospital has been handling more than 300 cases during 14 years. This is the greatest number among all hospitals in Indonesia. “Aneurysm disease ? I’ve done some comparative studies overseas ? requires the most expensive treatments, and here in Indonesia, all equipments are still imported. So, we will always try to help our best, but not by lowering the standards,” he added. As comparison, ICU?s rate in US reaches 3000 dollars / day, while in Indonesia, the ICU costs only about 300 dollars / day.

The solution to this problem can be by reducing taxes on medical equipments, or by increasing the Gross National Product in our country. At Siloam, when the patient is poor, the doctor?s service will be given free of charge. “But it becomes a problem, when he/she is placed in the ICU, since the use of medical equipments is not free. That will cost tens to hundreds of millions of rupiah,” added Dr. Eka. (sar)
