This is also a valuable opportunity for the students to test and improve their skills in crafting handmade products

UPH students from Faculty of Product Design held an exhibition at Building B Gallery on April 21-25, 2008. There are totally 60 products exhibited.

?The exhibition is to prepare the students of Product Design as up-and-coming Indonesian designers who have broad knowledge and good character in facing globalization. This is also a valuable opportunity for the students to test and improve their skills in crafting handmade products,? said Michelle, the person in charge, who is currently in her 2nd year study.

Several senior high schools students came and enjoyed the exhibition; they are from IPEKA Sunter and Karangturi, Semarang high schools. The students are amazed and interested by the pieces shown at the exhibition. Most of them are interested in the thumbdoll and several workshop products.

?This exhibition is also an opportunity to introduce Product Design to high school students and other visitors,? Michelle added.

The products shown, which are made by the UPH students year 2002-2007, include nirmana ruang, workshop, jewelry, craft, digital rendering digital, and sketch. Those are the subjects taught at the Faculty of Product Design.

The workshop is the hardest of all the subjects since UPH students have to make their pieces at the studio provided by UPH. By doing so, they cannot ask for help from professional carpenter. The example of such product is a lamp made by joining wood, resin, and iron. The students have to work on the materials by themselves, including bending the iron, making resin fiber, scouring, and applying the finishing.

In spite of the fact that the exhibition is only an assignment for UPH students, they have proven that they are able to produce innovative, useful, and valuable products.

During the exhibition, the committee also held a thumbdoll and jewelry workshop, which was joined by 70 participants. The results of the workshop were later exhibited too.
