The Information Systems (IS) program is a field of study that integrates management with computer technology. Unlike Informatics Engineering (IE), which focuses on computational algorithms, Information Systems focuses on designing, developing, and implementing an organisation’s information systems. IS students learn how to identify a company’s needs and analyse its ongoing or planned business processes by collecting company data, then designing an effective and efficient system to help achieve the company’s goals.
Do IS students still study computational algorithms? Yes, although the complexity level is not as deep as IE students. Essentially, Information Systems combines computer science with business management. To gain a solid foundation in computer science, IS students still need to learn algorithms and programming. However, the purpose of this learning is to manage, utilise, and develop information technology within an organisational or corporate context. This is why IS students also study management principles, business administration, financial and accounting information systems, enterprise systems, digital marketing, and more.
In today’s era of digitalisation, the use of computer technology as a core necessity for running a business has become inevitable. Utilising robust computer technology makes business processes far more efficient. This is why many companies seek IS graduates who can act as a bridge between IT professionals and the business objectives of an organisation.
For instance, a company may require personnel who can analyse large amounts of data (big data). The data collected from various sources must be valid and consistent, a process often referred to as data preparation. The company then needs to identify factors or algorithms that can influence predicted outcomes, which is known as data exploration. Next, they must create infographics to support decision-making by presenting data in an understandable way — a process called data visualisation. To accomplish all these tasks, companies rely on a data analyst.
Another example is corporate website development. In today’s era of digital marketing, many companies are seeking web developers to create or improve their websites for marketing, branding, and database storage purposes. Beyond IT specialists, companies also need IS graduates to ensure that the website content aligns with the company’s marketing targets.
To meet these demands, UPH’s Information Systems programme provides students with in-depth training on managing information as a resource. Students will learn how to bridge the gap between users and technology to support organisational and business goals through the development and implementation of information systems. The IS programme at UPH offers three areas of specialisation to respond to the ever-growing ICT (Information & Communication Technology) market: Business Data Analytics, Business Information Systems, and Mobile & Web Programming.
Business Data Analytics
In the era of big data and data science, it is essential for organisations and businesses to remain competitive and keep pace with technological advancements. Business Intelligence and Data Analytics is a cutting-edge specialisation designed to equip students with a solid foundation and strong skills in transforming data and information into solutions and insights that support decision-making and problem-solving within organisations. This specialisation focuses on topics such as data science, data mining, and statistical analysis, built upon information systems knowledge to enable effective use of big data.
Business Information Systems
Throughout their studies, students will gain skills in ICT (Information & Communication Technology), business analysis, and problem-solving. This includes knowledge in management information systems, business process analysis and improvement, project management, business intelligence, enterprise systems, strategic planning, and data technologies.
Mobile & Web Programming
This specialisation not only provides students with fundamental skills in developing web and mobile applications but also focuses on integrating these applications into business processes.
Career Opportunities in Information Systems
Graduates of UPH’s Information Systems programme are well-prepared to embark on careers as technopreneurs, project managers, systems analysts, web or mobile developers, IT consultants, IT auditors, business analysts, multimedia designers, and user interface (UI) designers. They can take on a wide range of ICT-related roles across various sectors, including national and multinational corporations, manufacturing, research and education institutions, government agencies, non-profit organisations, and many others.
